The only advantage of a 9 over a 10 for a fleet is a 9 can be converted to a 13 when the truck is sold for added value. Actually some fleets order the 13 then remove the splitter and swap the knob and the steering wheel holder never knows it's there.

Cost is the only reason fleets go with the 9's or 10's. There's only about 150# weight difference between a 9spd and an 18.

I wonder what the actual price difference is between all of the typical transmissions (9,10,13,15,18.) assuming all other parts are the same. (clutch, driveline ect.)

I have a few hills where I need to down shift one gear, and the splitter is so nice to have for that...also with an 18 speed the splitter means you are auto shifting half the time as well.

I do run it like a 13 speed when empty.

I`ve been running an 18 speed for the past 11 years and love the options you have in the low range. Better to have and not need then to need and not have, However I was doing construction off road a lot so it was an almost necessity to have the 18`er.

I got used to split shifting high range all the freaking time because of the speed at which you can shift which equates to no lag time, especially if you are climbing a steep hill, you can still shift and not worry about losing the gear due sudden loss of momentum on a steepy.....especially if starting the hill from a dead stop at a red light.

13's are more expensive and owners don't want to spend the money. The 9's and 10's drop 500 rpm when you shift. The trucks with more gears drop about 250 and make it easier to maintain your climbing speed in the mountains....that's why drivers like them. Nothing like ramping up to 1500 in one gear, then dropping to 1000 in another and lugging; the extra gears help you maintain 1300 or so rpm. Everyone here has said something to this effect.

The 15 speed was very popular in the 80's it was my favorite with the 13 next I didn't like the 18 at all super ten was just as bad.

    Sorry but you are wrong.

A straight 9 speed is just that 5 on the bottom and 4 on top.

a 10spd is closer to a 13 but without the top side spliten each gear.

I know i have driven all three types

Just because you have driven them, doesn't mean you know whats under them. A 9 speed transmission can be converted to a 13. All they need is to ad is the splitter box. and that is why fleets suck as Werner mainly order 9 speed trucks.... Cause the resale is much higher when they put that splitter box on.
