Float or clutch, just get the gears and don't tear up the box.

Wow!! lots of good reading on TMC here. I would like to start with them but I live in Houston. I looked at their "hiring map" on their website and it looks like longhaul is the only available option, can anyone verify that? if thats so, I can assume I wont be home every weekend? I have read so much on take home pay and it seems to vary quite a bit.....I need to be able to take home 800-1000 a week, I understand that right away that may not be possible but how about after 6 months or so?

Can someone help me I'am think about droping out of college just for the next couple years. And I will be 20 in Augest and Planning to get My CDL then I was hoping to drive for a local grain elevator for a year for some experiance and I was looking at TMC and love everything about it even cleaning the trucks for someone that has a hint of OCD I would do that anyway and I read on the website they hire only 23 and up what if your 21 with a a year or driveing experiance be I would like to be over the road and make money. So can anyone tell me if I had any experiance if they would even look at me or just turn me beacuse of my age I work at the grain elevator noew put not often and the drivers are paid by the hour and the work is speratic and its Hard work. its a small operation but my boss runs the drivers to death but he ain't lazy ethier he drives the trucks two and most of the time he out works the employees and he has to running in the 60's, But back to the orignal question say if I got my CDL and drove for the grain elevtor for year just for experiance and then wanted to over the road whould TMC even hire me.

I would recomend finish college first. You will have to wait till 23 for most otr jobs. Wait till 23 then you can go for the cdl. That would be my advice.

I would say stay in school. you can get you're CDL and do the grain thing for money if you want. but the problem is a lot of companies don't accept it as experience. The reason being is that a lot of grain haulers jobs are considered farm jobs. So they don't have to fallow a lot of the rules. For example in mn You don't have to have a cdl, and you don't have to log. I know a person that did the grain thing then got there CDL and then tried to get a job. Most of the companies wouldn't even considered him. Also I dropped out of college for a few years as well, then i got my cdl. I then had a bad experience with family members getting sick and dying on me. So I left the trucking industry and I went back to school and finished my degree. Now I want to go back to trucking and find a local job if i can. But i will have to pay for a refresher course. I should have just fished school first then did the CDL. Thats my advice two you take from it what you want. But as my Grandfather who served in the marine core as a pilot in world war II always said. They can take everything from you except you're education.:biggrin_25525:

Droping out is to harsh more like postpone becuase of circumstance with the school and my life at the point don't match up so I love what the TMC has to offer and would love to drive that kind of company but have an driveing experiance is better than none yet again you do need to know how to operate safely and swiftly too So working and this grain elevator that I have been at for almost two years will give time in a truck until opprotunits (Bad spelling) come open becuase I would like to do OTR but and the age yet, I just are one of those guys who likes to learn it all and do it all like a Jack of all trades really.

I agree with you but I would check with TMC to see if they will recognize what you are doing as active experience. If they don't you may have to go through a refresher course. And I left school for the same reason, and I will stay this it is harder to go back then to stay. But I do understand what you are going through like I said very similar to what i went through. But then again you do have a few years to look into it. In any event best of luck to you!

most, if not all companies will only consider time spent over the road as experience, TMC included. I had driven part time regionally for a few years before applying and they did not count it. when I went to a new company they only counted the 2 years spent at TMC as experience.
