I've used microsoft streets and maps. Not to bad. Except every now and then ou'll get a street not found, especialy if it's out in the boonies. And they are GPS compatable.

hey i just want to mention that i have verizon cell phone and it has gps service. for like $10/month or so, it will display your location on a map and tell you where to turn to get to a destination.

Unless he is for some reason really wanting to go with a laptop, a Garmin 330 (I think there is a 340 and 360 which are slightly better) is much cheaper and easier to use. I have one and it tells you everything you want to know.

I agree with previous statement. I use Garmin GPSmap 276C for couple years. Originally I got it to use on water sailing Great Lakes, but in winter I use in on land. Works great, on the road no need for the laptop.

I use a laptop with Delorme Street Atlas. There is no address in America that I can't find. After I have been there once, I enter the information (detailed!) into a database.
    My database is becoming priceless.

I didn't buy the trucking siftware that is available. Too expensive. I bought Delorme Street Atlas for about 40$. I always check with my Commercial Atlas for restricted routes.......it's never been a problem. A little common sense goes a long way.
I like Delorme because of the landmarks...all WalMarts, McDonalds, etc are on there and I use them to find my accounts.

Can the laptop and just purchase the GPS. Garmin's 2610 is a good one. It's upgradeable, and you can usually purchase a used one on Ebay for about $150.
