They started a few years back , but only a few at a time and only select students.
You need a clean MVR and a good work history, and a clean criminal background (Ibelieve)

Yeah, my uncle used to drive for crete/shaeffer/sunflower and had said they were really tight on their drivers. They never used to hire students and I believe 24 was the minimum age. I have always heard nothing but good about that company. The trucks aren't fast but their standards seem to be high. Actually I live a two miles from the terminal here in Deland, Fl. I think it's good though they are taking in a few students and hopefully training them right from the beginning.

  5. Congratulations to all you new hires with Crete. You made an excellent choice of companies. I've been hanging out here monitoring these threads for awhile and couldn't agree more with the advice of not listening to the whiners and complainers. Every company has them, unfortunately. I was lucky enough to get hired by Crete when I finished CDL school (back in '03) and drove for them for 8 months as a solo driver. My home was not conducive to getting frequent home time but it didn't stop the dispatchers from trying. In retrospect, it was my fault for not taking the opportunity that was obviously there to take a day or two off while passing through.
I am in the process of hiring back on with Crete, hopefully as an new O/O. The company was great to work for and I'm sure still is from the number of positive comments by the other drivers.

time for an update. this is the end of the second week, and my trainer had to take a few days off, so i pulled a few strings and got home. the trainer lives in indianapolis, and i caught a ride with another driver last night to chattanooga.

training is going well, averaging between 450 to 600 miles a day, depending on the destination and the time required for the trip.

first trainer was a #####y old man, been driving 38 years. his AC unit went out and instead of me sitting around at Lincoln waiting to get it fixed, i was assigned a new trainer.

my current trainer is more close to my age. he is funny as hell. we are in a brand spanking new cascadia, it left the yard in lincoln a week ago with 39 miles.

so far, they have run me to death all over the northeast. Michigan, Ohio, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Iowa, PA, indiana and Illinois mostly. things are going well, just waiting for the rest of the training to be done. being cramped in a cab with someone for a few weeks can be good or bad, it just depends on what you make of that situation.

i will update when i can, the computers in lincoln are slowwwww and i hate waiting on pages to load.

    more to come......................

Right now I still have a uncle sam commitment to finish but I'm doing my research and just seeing what's going on at Crete/Shaffer, I plan to apply between Jul-Sep 2011 and go from there, so I'll just be checking out different threads about Crete/Shaffer, be safe out there!!

Finished up 8 weeks of training the other day, or just about...

My fleet/terminal manager asked that I call in every week during training, just to make sure things were going fine, and they were. This past week, the 8th week of training, I called in and gave my resignation notice.

I have no problems with Crete or the job itself. Sure, they could probably be a bit more organized in some areas, but I really had no real issues with the company. It was just the idea of being away from home for weeks at a time that started to become unappealing, a little depressing and not worth the salary, so I figured I'd call it quits before they spent money sending me through orientation and went through the process of getting me assigned to a truck.

Bottom line, over the road just wasn't for me. The 8 weeks out was a good experience and helped me appreciate the idea of being home often to do what I want in my free time and see my family regularly, but I just couldn't see myself adapting to that life -- Had to try it though.

I've got a couple of local prospects here, so hopefully those work out. The pay will actually be a bit more, but the best part is that I'll be home much more often.

I'll come back and update once I secure the new job.

I am considering moving over to Crete.
I am at Heartland now, but the short miles are killing me. We only haul short to med hauls with them, and they do not pay practical miles. Also we do not run Ohio or Indiana turnpikes at all, but they will not pay you the miles around.
I figure on average I am loosing 300 miles per week due to this.
Sure I am home almost every weekend, but the benifits suck and the pay just does not cut it.
So here I am saying hello. Sent in an app, and I am seriously considering going back to full OTR. I need to make some decent money again.
