See if there is any dairy hauling in the area. This is a regional driving job that might be perfect for him. Also, there is Vulcan Materials in Alabama and he might drive a aggregate, mixer or cement tanker. Or he might want to work in one of their rock crushers driving a Euclid.
I wouldn't be discouraged. The OTR thing is not what it used to be. I drive for a concrete company and after taxes and a 6% 401k I bring home nearly $900 a week.
Very Discouraged

My husband talked with Maverick and McElroy today. Both sounded very positive but
Both said to contact them after we move- is this probably standard? There's absolutely no
Way we can move without a job-thats insane
Checked vulcan's website but all the driver positions open are in virgnia -
Even after you move you still have to make the cut. Not all make it thru orientation. If you are out of their hiring are they won't even talk to you until you are in the right area. The way I understood you is that you need to move there anyway. If that is the plan you got to get in the right area to look for the home time jobs. Co's that never or seldom get you home hire from anywhere. If you want to level the field for home you got to be in the area to do it.

I appreciate all the information. I guess we're lookin in the wrong direction. We are prepared to move but not to be able to live indefinitely without a paycheck.

Your welcome. I know the feeling. None of us like stepping out into the unknown...

Where in Alabama? Would Dothan or Birmingham be acceptable?
-
Azeron - yes Dothan or Birmingham....Montgomery...Mobile...really anything south of Birmingham. Do you know of something we should check into?
-
Yes. Fed Ex has a Drver Apprentice position in Dothan and Bessemer. -
Generally the better LTL companies like drivers with at least 1 yr experience. If you have freight and local delivery experience even better. They don't like to hire guys right out of school. It really depends on the economy, when it's busy we need drivers and when it's slow we don't. They do have good benefits and most top out at over 20 an hour.

Unfortunately you have to pay your dues as a new driver. Once he has some good experience he will be able to be more choosy with what company he wants to go with and where he would like to run. As a new driver sounds as if he has a pretty decent gig now! Grass is always greener though...
