I think it is Federal regs that say 100 air miles and return to the terminal then you dont need to log but also......if you work over 12 hours (local drivers) you would also need to log
-
Log or no log you cannot split shift a truck driving job if it causes you to go over 14 hours. Period. Even in a sleeper you can not go over 14 hours.
As far as the air exemption, you still need to have a time card or a route sheet.otherhalftw Thanks this. -
Question; Do you ever leave the state?
If not what state?
The reason I ask is the US Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration web site states federal HOS regulations do not apply to intrastate commerce;
Here's the link http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regulations/truck/driver/hos/hos-faqs.asp#_Toc111021227
However your state probably has its own HOS regulations which you would be subject to. I underlined it for you in the quote.
"B-1. Do these HOS regulations apply to intrastate commerce?
No. Intrastate commercial motor vehicle regulations are under the jurisdiction of each State. The HOS regulations apply directly only to interstate commerce. However, most States have adopted intrastate regulations which are identical or very similar to the Federal hours-of-service regulations. A driver involved exclusively in intrastate operations should contact the State agency handling commercial vehicle enforcement in the driver's home State with any questions. Usually this is the state police or highway patrol, although in some States, the function is handled by the department of motor vehicles, department of public safety, or public service commission."Last edited: Jun 28, 2010
otherhalftw and johnday Thank this. -
Even going off duty, there is no way to log that legal... your 14 hours are up at 19:00. AND... even if you split, at 19:00 you would need an 8 hour break, given the fact that you took 4 hours off at home.

If he lived in Alaska he can run 15 hours a day and work up to 20, (15 driving and 5 on duty not driving). Obviously the 14 hour rule is null and void in this state!

Hey Guys,
A lot of great information. I live in PA. I occasionally go to NJ. When I have a "long" day, I make sure I have 10 hours before going on duty the next day for pre trip. Thankfully this doesn't happen every day, but it does happen. Unfortunately, it looks like being creative is what needs to happen. I am not happy with it, but not sure of any other choices. Thanks again everyone. -
You are subject to federal DOT HOS
Interstate commerce
Sorry -
I hate to break it to you guys, but it is entirely possible for a trucker to work a 16 hr day once per week, if they start and stop from the same terminal location and go home afterwards. My boss has started to pull this crap on me occasionally.
-
If the delay is caused by something that could not be predicted like t/a , You cant just schedule a 16 hour day every week.
