Hello everyone,
Let me just start of by saying this is a great forum with tons of information. I am very thankful for it.
So let me start this introduction off.
My name is Mark and I'm 20 years old. I'm from Detroit, Michigan. I'm looking into becoming a truck driver as I quit my last job and am currently unemployed.
What made me think about becoming a trucker? Well I'm a high school dropout so there goes my chance at getting any other decent job. I know it was the worst decision of my life but I can't look back, I can only move forward. To be a trucker is having a career and not just a job like my last. I dreaded waking up having to go to work. I don't want another minimum wage 9-5. I think this is my only shot at being something so I want to take it.
Let me say that my last job paid $11 an hour and I was working never no less then 56 hours a week so I was bringing home no less than $616. I just hope to make that much minimally on any given week after finishing school and training and going solo. Is this doable?
I know it's going to be stressful and scary being a newb on the open road somewhere you have never been, might get lost or what not but I like the challenge and I need to suceed at it!
I think I already found the school but I think I should wait til I'm closer to 21 years of age to start. I know you have to be 21 to cross state lines and I don't think companies will hire me because I'm not of age. My birthday is in October so I'm thinking I should start late August or early September.

To be a interstate Truck Driver, you must be 21 years old. You will also find a lot of companies won't look at you unless you 25!
You have time before you can become an official truck driver... Go get your GED while you wait!Baack Thanks this. -
Schneider National and a few others will take you at 21 years old. Most companies do want drivers to be a minimum of 23 years old though.
Do get your GED, if you have not already.
Best!!!Baack Thanks this. -
i agree with the others ladd, most companies frown on 21year olds but ye can always do a school or just go to dmv and go that way, alot cheaper, and get a local short haul gig to get some experience in then move up to over the road, cause ladd its not for everyone,iv seen many wontin to be otr drivers but they couldnt handle the short haulin, most companies require 21+age and minimum 6months experiance in the past 12 or 2yrs otr experience. But do your research and dig through forms on here you will learn what ye need to know.Good luck to ye ladd.
kickin chicken and Baack Thank this. -
