Brazilian soybean farmers envy U.S., but compete

Brazilian soybean farmers have brought their production up to the level of their North American counterparts, but they still envy parts of U.S. agriculture.

"I wish I didn't have to spray 10 times a year, instead of two or three times like an American farmer," said Robert de Oliveira Silva, who farms 3,800 acres in south-central Brazil.

While Iowa's harsh winters kill or thin out most insect varieties, Brazil's warm climate year around leaves the country more vulnerable to pests.
Then there is the transportation problem.

"It is not uncommon for a trucker to have to wait one or two days to be unloaded at a port in our country," said Bruno Barcellos, who raises cattle and grows about 1,000 acres of soybeans on a 28,000-acre operation near the Paraguay border.

In Iowa, truckers who take produce to elevators consider themselves put out if they have to wait more than 15 minutes to unload.

"We would love to have a transportation system like we see in Iowa," said Barcellos. "Our railroads and roads are not up to what we have seen here."

lol careful what ya wish for Brazil!!!!

In this country,99% of soybeans are owned by 1 company,Monsanto.
Its the first crop ever to have a patent on the DNA.

Lol they need to talk to an american soybean farmer and ask them what they think.Even better,they should talk to the 1% not owned yet,YET!

In the next decade, the true story about this countries 2nd largest crop will become more public,and it wont sit to pretty with the average joe.
