I've never seen on that was spitting the shifter out that didn't end up getting rebuilt, but it could be simpler. Either way, it's likely internal. Just in case, does anything happen at the same time? If you have a shift tower or linkage problem, a twist in the cab suspension or frame could pull it out of gear.

If it just pukes it out of gear when you load the driveline, I'd expect it's terminal and bearing related, but it could be a problem with a bent shift fork or similar situation. Either way, I'd be afraid it's going to let you down sooner, rather than later.

Yep, sliding clutch is not fully engaging between the gear and main shaft. Could be worn shift tower, worn fork, worn sliding rail, broken detent spring. Tower and top cover are replaceable without overhauling or replacing the trans. It depends on how undriveable it is right now and how hard it would be get access to top of trans to say whether or not it would be worth replacing just the top or going for a whole rebuilt trans. If you can live with it, I would say continue to use. If you are due for a clutch soon then do the trans then.

This reminds me of a tractor I drove for Tri-State Motor Transit in the late 1960s. It began to slip out of high gear when power was applied. We rowed it to Joplin.

Attach a bungee cord from the edge of the seat so you can wrap it around the shifter.

Sometimes you can smack the spinning thingy with a big enough hammer to cause a flat spot so it will wedge itself into place.

Better yet, while you have it out to hit it with a hammer, give to your mechanic.

the sliding clutch is what engages the gear. its on the mainshaft and splined to the mainshaft. the outside of the sliding clutch has teeth on it which mate to the inside of your main box gears. the shift fork slides over the sliding clutch, when u move the stick the shift fork moves the sliding clutch inside the gear you selected, which connects that gear to the mainshaft. you have 3 sliding clutches. when the sliding clutches wear the teeth round off to a point instead of the teeth being square. thats why it jumps out of gear. the trans will need to be completly disassembled to replace clutches. the lower counter shaft does not need to be removed
