Can anyone tell me what the swift road test during orientation consists of? I already have my CDL and some limited experience (I know I know swift blah blah blah its really my only option right now) but I just want to know what I need to prepare myself for. I will not be going through the academy and have already read everything I could find on here but nothing that helps me out. Please if anyone has any info it would really help me out! I start orientation on July 7th so I only have a few days to brush up since it has been a few months since I have driven.

My test out consisted of doing a pre-trip (to myself, not having to do it out loud) straight line back, a 45 and a sight side parallel I think it was. Then a 15 minute road test. That was it. Good luck and be safe out there.

He is talking about the orientation road test, not the test out after the training.

The orientation road test is simply getting in the truck and driving around a block so the tester can see how you drive and if you have the basics of driving. Very simple stuff. Takes about 10 minutes to do.

    It varies.

So does the test out after the mentoring period. It varies from testing locations.
Denver will do a test out that's like the CDL testing at the end of school. pretrip...maneuvers.......road...and then they tack on a tailer load of backings/dockings. In Phx the test out after mentoring was one 45 degree backing.

I still have harsh feelings towards the DM I had at the time who forced me to test in Denver. Seriously......I hope he goes bald.

He probably is since he is the first DM rookies get (Training Fleet)...tends to make you pull hair out trying to communicate with a new "former student" who had a Mentor that only wanted miles and not teaching anything!

    SAD BUT TOO OFTEN TRUE!:biggrin_25521:

Might be the one I pulled through the window back in 97! He just wouldn't listen and called me a BADDDD NAME, in front of my student and others...so, reach through/grab/and pull...he did a lot of sniveling once he was on my side of the window!

THAT WAS A GOOD DAY...and the day I met Jerry Moyes...he was standing behind me when the incident occurred...Jerry said I was qualified for K-Mart dedicated since I could toss "large, useless items"...the DM went and had some counseling with his supervisor!

At my home terminal, it's as I explained. Pretty much every Tuesday when I come in to work, I see them doing the same thing, lolol.

They used to just grab a Mentor from the crowd for the road test...Sparks Terminal...quick ride through the Petro parking lot, and Lathrop Terminal, down the street, one left turn, one dock, then back with a right turn. Piece of cake!
