    Ok...all you copyright whiners......

Don't sing Happy Birthday To You in public......It is not public domain...in fact Time Warner still holds possession of the work...

BTW...If you alter a melody line or a product by more than 50%.....You are free to market your product....

Levi-Strauss and Anchor Blue did it all of the time with their clothing lines...

For a song....Let's say you take a melody line and either alter it by changing the rhythm....Changing the progression of the melody line....Do it by more than 50%.....Legal to do so....

Chord progressions cannot copy protected....and neither can bass lines...IIRC...Even percussion patterns cannot be protected.... either....

Now.....I know this because 21 years ago I was involved in recording project with a band....
I wrote most of the lyrics.....I wrote most of the music.....

The band broke up before the project was published.....But....I took the time to copy right all of my works...

The Lead Guitarist reformed the band and he changed each and every work by more than 50%.....The progressions were essentially the same...but Intros, hooks, choruses, and outro's were changed enough to be legal....

Anyone who heard the masters on the works could tell what was done....But the paying public thought the guitarist wrote and produced the songs....

This is nothing new. Why do you think all the tv shows, even going back to Gilligan's Island back in the mid 1960's, sing "He's a Jolly Good Fellow?"

One of my favorite sites when my DVR would miss a show or not be able to record it do to only being able to record two shows at the same time was Ninjavideo.net.

I'd catch up on a show there from time to time. Went there yesterday and the Feds had shut it down.

Time to brush up on my code and start working CW.

    You sound right.

It amuses me how some people ,knowingly, deliberately, and without apology, decide to break laws, and find all types of reasons to justify their illicit actions ,when it suits them, but then get on their high horses and act holier than thou, when other people do the same thing in different circumstances.

Still happily ignoring what I wrote, I see. Get back to me when you learn how to read. Otherwise, you're just another ignorant fool that doesn't understand your freedom is being taken away from you. I actually feel sorry for you.

And the view that you expressed, IIRC, is that since I didn't fit your convoluted idea of a fascist America, that I need to be shipped to Cuba. Now where have I heard that "ship 'em off" philosophy before? Hmmmm.

And I just can't resist. Their property? No sir. My property, your property, property of the American public; after affording them reasonable time to gain profit. That, after all, is what copyright protection is all about.

If the mousetrap were invented today, you couldn't build a better one. That would be infringement.

    I thought you were done.

I have not ignored what you wrote.Your problem is that I understand exactly what your position is, regarding selectively observing the law.

Do you feel like a man now,for first threatening physical violence, and now for calling me an ignorant fool? How is my freedom being taken away,by protecting someone's property from theft and illegal use? It is not I whose 'freedom' is in jeapordy. It is those who think they should do what they want ,with other people's property who are being restricted. And I don't need your sympathy.

As for your mousetrap scenario, according to post #72, if the'better mousetrap' is 50% different from the original, it can be legally marketed.

Sir,I am not telling you to observe the law.You are a grown man,who can supposedly do what he wants. Just pointing out that you seem to be advocating breaking of the law, and you seem to oppose the enforement of the law,and the protection of certain people's rights and property. If you are offended by my observations, then tough.

Business ideas are NOW being copyrighted, my friend. Why do you continue to argue while being uninformed? Makes you look silly. And I didn't call you an ignorant fool. I said you need to inform yourself or you would be just another ignorant fool. You trying to get me banned now or something, because you have no reasoned arguments explaining why creative works should no longer enter public domain after a reasonable time to profit?

Not only that, post 72 isn't up to date. Why do you think all the mixed/mashed music sites are being shut down, even though they are creative works that should be allowed license because the works are entirely different from the original works? Things have changed in the last few years, dramatically. To expound a little, in today's world, Ray Charles could never have released 1955's "I Got a Woman." Too much sampling.

I have repeatedly said copyright should be protected, and then allowed to enter the public domain as was originally intended. Why do you choose to ignore that?

And do you understand what copyright protection actually is? It protects a work to ensure profit...for a reasonable time, which is fair. After that, any creative work belongs to the public domain...as the public paid to protect that work to ENSURE profit.

However...you insist that thievery is OK for corporations? Explain that with something other than "it's the law". Why should law protect thievery, and take what belongs to everyone? Are you saying that taking property from the public should be legal? Gee...that's so...1930ish. Want me to wear an armband too?

    You can't have possibly read:

    http://www.thepublicdomain.org

because...you simply don't seem to understand what the public domain is.

Then again, you can always use "post number such-and-such" as a credible reference, I guess.

As far as selectively ignoring the law - and I'm going to put this in military terms because I happen to be a vet - you sure as heck wouldn't have seen me on trial over My-Lai. Blindly following the law - or orders in military terms - is unconscionable. Questioning the law is what makes America great. Freedom is what makes this country shine. And if a law is wrong - it needs to be changed.
