Can you give me a short tutorial on how to shorten my antenna? Do I just take a hacksaw to it? Or do I try to carve out the wire and unwind some?
Thanks..

O.k hers the straight goods. 1) If your squeal is coming through your speaker you are over modulating, meaning your mic is to powerfull, adjust the output (dynamic). If you have a power mic your radio adjustment should be turned back. 2)If it is sqealing thru everyone elses radio this means you have a grounding problem in the antenna, cables or mounting brackets.new cables(on tight) with new brackets and ant. mounted with the proper insulated washers should cure this. hope this helps.
Ken Thanks this. -
It squeals on everyone elses radio. I can hear it just faintly over my stereo speakers..
I have an RK56 on it now. I'm gonna try the original to see if it's any better..
I'll check all the connections too.. -
Yeah, pull the rubber cap off, you will see a slot the slot contains a copper wire, pull it up to the length you wish to cut off snip it then tuck the end back in the slot, just remember you can't put it back.
Check CH 1 ch 19 CH 40. after you cut, recheck it. shoot me your swr readings on these channels.Ken Thanks this. -
If CH 1 is higher than 40 your antenna is to short, you can add a spring and check it, if its new take it back to the store.
If CH 40 is higher than 1 your antenna is to long you can trim.
Best situation CH19 will have the lowest SWR.
Don't cut the fibreglass, just the copper wire, snip put the cap back when your thru.Last edited: Jul 4, 2010

I just ran out to the shop and checked the SWR really quick.. I did it inside a metal shop so I'm not sure if that matters..
Ch 1 is 3.00 19 & 40 were just a little less at about 2.9... -
NO bad Ken.

You all ways check your SWR as far away from EVERYTHING you don't want to be in a building. You don't even want to be near a building or other trucks for that matter. Also SWR that high can and will Burn Out Your Finals in the Radio -
Okay.. That's why I mentioned that I was in the shop.. I'll try agaion tomorrow...

Yeah, It matters it will read higher in the shop. If you have a ohm meter make sure that your antenna mounts without antennas should show open between the center and the shield. Then check center to center and ground to ground to make sure that they are not open. if these are good go ahead and recheck the swr.

Sounds like a ant. grounding problem. If you have add on,s to your c.b. like power mic or talk back. take them off and use the basic mic after redoing all ant connections. It is easier to test a simple system and then add on one piece at a time.
