Despite the above statement, I do not agree with ridiculously governed (56-63mph) trucks either. Yes it is safer to be able to have a fluctuation in speed. Speed restricters create dangerous convoys especially in heavy traffic conditions. Below 60mph in a 75 zone does create problems. Especially when the four wheelers are averaging 90! Maybe some experienced drivers can step in here but I believe roughly 60% of the drivers out there are inexperienced and should not be handling a truck that is capable of 90+mph. By knocking the speed down to 62mph not only saves on fuel (which you can accomplish at 65 also) but helps the drivers that can't think for themselves stay on the road in adverse conditions. However, like I said 62 can be dangerous in a 75 zone. Sorry to ZILLABUILT, was not aimed at you. You are a new driver and haven't yet seen the frustrations of this dilemma. It is interesting though how people pick their career around how fast the truck will go. Does that sound like something a kid would do to you?

You'd have the same dilemma if no trucks were governed and could all run 75mph, only worse. It's just one of those things, ain't gonna change.

...and my mindset is the same...don't drive balls-out, but it is true that slower speeds on the interstates CREATES MORE of a hazzard than running with traffic. Even the DOT (or DPS) regs. say that you should stay in the flow of traffic to reduce the likelihood of creating hazzardous situations. If I am mistaken about the regs., please correct me...but I recently (within the last week) got my CDL, so, I have studied the regs. closely as of late. But, if I am wrong, I will accept it.

No problem~! I'm willing to hear any considered and honest advice or opinion...regardless of wheather it is in agreement with me. But, like I posted before, I am quite certain that I read in either the DOT, or the DPS regs. that it is recommended to stay with the flow of traffic in order to reduce hazzardous situations...soooooo...if those agencies believe it is safer to drive 70mph than 62, that blows any statement from companies regarding their decision to govern their trucks is for safety in any capacity out of the water...and NO...I wouldn't drive 80 even if that was with traffic because I do recognize the limitations of the equipment and my ability to control it. Maybe a new driver, such as myself, should be required to drive a governed truck for the first 100,000 miles to gain that experience you mentioned...then, having showed a safety-concious attitude, open their trucks up to at least 70 or 75. What's your thoughts on that~?

The comments regarding moving with the flow of traffic deal with high volume traffic centers.
Say you go to Chicago and the interstate has a speed limit of 55 mph. You want to do 55 because it is the speed limit. However, the traffic is backed up. You have to go with the flow of the traffic. If the traffic is running faster, a professional driver must remember safety at all times. They are usually restricted to the right two lanes. If the traffic is running 75 mph in a 55 mph zone, I would not drive a cmv at that speed and subject myself to a loss of license ticket. Use common sense.
As far as the rural interstate goes, there are minimum speed limits. You have to sustain them and all drivers must be prepared for the varying speed. -
Isn't Chicago a mess? They want you in the two right lanes then because of the construction they want you in the left lane (which is half a lane and a barricade!) Then add traffic, plus ice and snow. We lived in Chicago while hauling horses commercially. The two main race tracks are in the middle of Chicago and all of our hunter/eventing customers were always on the north side or in WI. It was a bear hauling those animals through all that!
Zillabuilt, it is nice to see someone take the time to read those manuals! Are you in school now? I think you have a good head on your shoulders and one day will probably make a good O/O. Pm me if you need anything. -
O yeah haulin them horses. Who did you run for out of Chicagoland area? I use to do it before I joined the military.
-
Never hauled horses commercially, but did haul race horses through Chicago with regular truck and horse trailers. I know just which two tracks you are talking about too. Worked at both of them, plus Balmoral just south of Chi-town. Yes, hauling horses through Chicago sucks. Too bad Sportsman's is no longer horse racing. I miss that place.
-
That's what I did. Had a freightliner with custom horse trailer. Also had a freightliner straight truck horse van. Check out my profile I have picts. Who were you hauling for? What did you think about handling the thoroughbreds?

Sherman brothers heavy trucking has there trucks set at 60 mph. They get passed by everyone. Lmao....
