Hi everyone -
Me and my husband are looking at doing a career change into OTR trucking. We would like to be a husband/wife team. We are also looking into taking our large dog with us. Is there any advice from people with experience on taking pets along? How much room is there inside a cabin?
I have read that CR England offers team training without splitting us up. We would like to do this together.... are there other companies that also offer training that wouldn't split us up?
I also would like to know if we went to a local trucking or CDL school... would we be able to be team drivers? Or do you need a certain amount of experience after training first?
Thanks for your time!
Potential Husband/Wife team..

There are others that will be able to give you good answers on the team thing. However, the dog could be potentially problematic. Many companies don't allow pets in the trucks, and if they do there is usually a size limit . . . animated squeak toys . . . I mean small dogs are allowed, large ones are usually not. Won't be able to take the dog during training at all.

certainly get your cdl threw a colledge or local school . then most schools will help with a team driving job. Covenant does teams as far as dog have seen covenant do as well . The size of the dog, whew will say that cab gets small quick. an you cant take dog while training. Me and a good friend teamed up from school then trained together . We are teamed for next six months then my wife is on the truck as a co driver as soon as she finishes school

Google Interior for lets say Freightliner Columbia truck. There are all kinds of pictures and videos available. The interior is small. I drive with a big dog. 75 pounds of Golden Retriever and it can get tight.
You have the two seats in the front, with about 2-3 feet between them, depending on the model of the truck. Behind the seats you have cabinets, closets on each side, maybe 2 feet wide, and behind that a bed. My dog gets antsy, and I take a TON of time with him, which you can't do as team drivers. I try to put in as much time every day with him as I can, often park at rest areas or other places where I can let him run and play.
It is not easy. Rufus has been in the truck since he was a puppy. Getting an adult animal used to that is not easy. I am not trying to discourage you, having my buddy with me is important to me, as it would be for you too.
Find a local big truck dealership and ask to look into a truck. A lot of the bigger companies mainly use Freighliner and International trucks.
About the training together. My advice to you, do it separately. It will make you a more confident driver, no disrespect to your spouse, but most of them are not suited to teach you to drive, or will make the worst back seat drivers ever. Apart from that, you will not limit yourself as far as what company you can go to, if you only want to train together.
Good luck to you.Last edited: Jul 6, 2010

There are ways around everything. My wife and I teamed and drove for Central Ref. They let us take out great dane with us! We had to do a few special favors and put down a deposit but they let us. Especially if you decide to buy a truck. When we trained we all rode together. Myself, my wife and the trainer. Since I was experienced we only rode with the trainer for two weeks. It was tight! It is going to be tough on you guys in the beginning but if you can pass three months you should be able to hack it. Husband and wife teams are the "cream of the crop" and you will most likely get special treatment. Like good loads, lots of miles and drop and hooks. We made very good money after the first year, and after 6 years we are sitting on a 30 acre horse training facility that is paid for! The worst part about it is we both very much miss it and are already planning on doing it again in our elder years. If you guys have any questions at all pm me. If your wife needs to talk to another woman driver I can put her in touch with my wife. I am very excited for you guys and hope the best of luck to you! This will be the best adventure of your life.
