I was at the training academy the other day with my paperwork (drivers med, police check, etc.) when the admin noticed on my drivers med that I have sleep apnea. My family physician didn't have to put it on there but he did anyway noting that the apnea is controlled with my cpap machine. On the advice of the admin I also got my sleep specialist to sign the drivers med and made sure that he indicated on it that he approves of me training for class a,b, and d licenses. He did this. The admin told me that I should now contact some companies to see if they would have a problem with this. So my question is, how much of a problem is this going to be?
Will this prevent me from being hired?

If you are using CPAP and have the kind that records your use of it so you can prove you are, indeed, using it, you should have no problem getting a job. You had a waiver signed by your sleep doctor who attests you are healthy enough to drive and your apnea is controlled.
You should be fine. -
Not familiar with canadian laws, but I'm sure somebody will know.
Good Luck !!!! -
Steve, sleep apnea is a "buzz word" in the industry right now. It's far more prevalent than many believe. It appears you and your doctor have done your initial homework as far as getting hired. Any potential employer will find out (unless you run local) as you will be matched with a trainer running OTR for a period of time.
You are really in uncharted waters @ this point in time as the industry has just awoken to this affliction. Schneider National is one carrier that has taken the bull by the horns regarding this and understands it. One thing you will require is a CPAP that records your use of it. You carrier will want the proof and the law soon may require it.
Good luck to you and again you are in uncharted waters. -
Thanks for that. I don't want to invest all that money in training if there is no possibilty of finding employment when the training is over. When I first started looking at driving I tried calling several companies to see what the market was like. Only 2 companies returned my calls. I guess I will have to start phoning and emailing again in hopes of getting in touch with some of them.

Steve, IF the global economy continues to strengthen there will be work, that's IF the economy doesn't dip again.
If it was me doing this I would go to a "walk in" clinic and get another medical and NOT disclose my sleep apnea (there fore it wouldn't be noted on the long form. There are NO current regs regarding sleep apnea right now so why open a big can of worms.
Just a suggestion. -
The global economy is strengthening? Not according to the news sources I've been seeing.

I thought of that but was told by the admin at the school that it wouldn't be a good idea. They sent me to MTO to see if I could be authorized to begin training and to write my test. MTO approved me but put my medical in the data base so now it's public record. -
Steve your medical is NOT public record.
It is on file with the Ministry and your Doctor knows what is on it.
If you had another medical done and did nothing with it but gave it to your new employer who would be the wiser? -
Good point. So far I've been able to get hold of 2 companies. The first one told me to forget about it. They would not hire any new drivers with my condition. The 2nd company said there is no regulation or law to prevent me from being hired. They said I should talk to more companies and try to get a "feel" of the attitudes towards this.
