Finished CDL school a few weeks ago and the staff there basically had us (students) zerg trucking companies with applications. Assuming that it was essentially to improve our odds of getting a job and in turn, allowing them to state that <x %> of students from their school got hired right after training.

Anyway, after everything was said and done most of us received feedback from multiple companies and set-up dates for orientation (minus the final confirmation call to assure them that we are still coming). My question (finally) is how much of a negative impact does this have on job hunting?

Say for example, I set up several of these orientations and I go to orientation with one of the companies and don't like the company (or the company doesn't like me). In going to said orientation, I would likely miss the dates of the other arrangements. Am I pretty much going to be s.o.l. with the few I had orientation arranged with? or will simply re-applying to them put me back into the hiring process? (Mind you, this is all before they had a final confirmation call with me or spent any cash on a bus ticket to the facility, etc).

Hopefully it will be a non-issue and everything works out with orientation with option (a), but it never hurts to have a back-up plan in place.

Call and tell the recruiters that you are not able to make the orientations. I would also suggest that you send an email. This way you have proof that you had contacted them.
The first company that you choose to go to work for, as well as any others) will show up on your DAC report. The next company will see this. They will probably work with you. But, it is considered job hopping. Companies do not like this. It represents instability in the new hire or driver.Don't accept a position until you have done your homework on them. Make sure it is a good choice for you.
I see this all the time, students put in pre hires and upon graduation they are expected to pick a company. These companies can be demanding in forcing an orientation on the new graduate.
I had just seen this in another thread. The guy found out that he would be paid per diem and he did not like that idea. Make a list of things that you want from a company so that you will not be disappointed in the end result. Such as: Lumping, types of trailers, stops, pulping produce while hauling reefers, company paid tolls and lumper charges (or are you reimbursed), would you get charged for out of route miles or idling? What kind of APU is furnished for the driver? These are just a few of the questions that I can think of right now... I hope this helps.

    Best !!!!
