Ha, Raezzor believe me, I do the exact same! The important part is we don't stop trying. I do not waste anyone's time including myself. If you are not happy with a company move on! Otherwise it will make you miserable. I don't know if you are working now but my cousin was working for windy hill and loved it. It's an old school company that doesn't bother you and lets you do your job. Terminals in WI and FL. Very personable company. My cousin is a slacker and did very well with this company because they treated him like family and let him drive the truck. Pay was not the highest but he was making really good miles. Highly recommended.

It depends on what you want from life. Me? I'm single, it's just me and that worthless furball you guys call a cat. I have weekends off, I stay in shape and I am socking money away for college. Most of the time my dispatcher has to call me to make sure I am still driving the truck.

Also there aren't too many areas to see. I am a huge drinker, but only on my days off. But I take days off near places I want to go. Park in Newark, hit the tube to NYC, drink and fight with an Irishman almost the entire time. After knocking him out we became the best of friends. Without your wife she may get a little angry. I know if I had wife she would be angry too if I am checking out the girls in a bar in a town I don't know.

Also getting a CDL has changed in the few years I've had mine. So look into everything before you make a move. Going hungry sucks, going hungry with an angry wife is worse.

Alright, driving is good and companies are bad. I guess the next question is whether it is possible to work independent of the companies. I would assume that this is what is meant by an "independent" or owner operator. I get the obvious advantages of a company - they pay for fuel and repairs, but is finding loads as an independent that difficult or is the risk of breakdown simply too high?

This is a long thread (78 pages) and some what redundant but many of these questions are answered
So you want to "own " your own company

    Thanks,

Like I said. I knew that all of this has been asked many times that people are tired of seeing it.

You have a long road ahead of you before owning a truck. Look into the newbie threads or possibly company/student driver posts. You can send me a pm if you have any questions also, I don't mind helping new guys. There are a lot of good facts on this site but there are also a lot of opinions too. Just keep that in mind.

    Thanks Chompi,

In all fields one must pay their dues and learn what must be learned to even have a chance of making it, but it is really hard to know what to think of all of the confusing messages. What's industry hype and what's reality? On the one hand I see and read stuff (mostly in mainstream media) about how great trucking is and about the lack of drivers in the industry and all of the jobs but then there seems to be so many disillusioned/disappointed/disheartened souls in these threads who really read like they have made a huge mistake because they can't get miles and are treated like garbage by the companies/dispatchers/freighter handlers, etc. It's funny how there are threads about great companies and ones about bad companies and the same names appear in both threads. Like I said, I have a full time gig that I really dislike, but my greatest fear is walking away from one nightmare only to find myself in another. One thing is for sure from what I have read so far and that is that no one in trucking seems to be neutral about it. It seems like people either love it or hate it. As has been written many times, it is a life, I absolutely get that. I can only assume that those who hate it expected the life to be something other than what it is.

You have to remember, trucking is one of those careers that just about anybody can walk into. You don't have to dip, weigh 300lbs, wear suspenders and cowboy boots and not take showers to like trucking or to be a trucker. It is however a lifestyle. You LIVE on the road. You work 24hrs a day 7 days a week for 4-6weeks! If you are a professional person, somewhat of a go-getter, have experience in holding a decent job chances are you will probably do well in trucking. It is very tough if you have a family at home though. There are a lot of complainers here but then again most of the positive people are out making money and don't spend a lot of time typing on forums! I would recommend you checking out some of the companies you don't hear a lot about on this website. Also remember the trucking schools get paid to send you to certain companies. The recruiters at the companies get paid by how many people they can get to orientation! No different than car salesman. If you have to work a little to get hired it might be more worth your time. One more thing, the companies that aren't advertising that much have a lower driver turnover rate. Does this mean drivers are happier there?
