TROY, ILL. - Eastbound Illinois Route 162 remained closed today after two girders of the bridge that carries the highway over Interstate 55/70 was hit by a truck Wednesday night.
A truck with an oversize load was northbound on I-55/70 when it struck the bridge about 8 p.m., according to Ted Nemsky, Illinois Department of Transportation District 8 construction engineer. He said northbound I-55/70 was closed for about an hour for inspection of damage and removal of loose concrete from the bridge deck.
Eastbound traffic on Route 162 was being detoured via I-55/70 and Illinois Route 159.
Inspectors returned to the site Thursday morning for additional damage assessment.
Work is underway to replace the entire bridge structure and interchange. Part of the structure had been removed and Route 162 traffic restricted from four to two lanes plus turn lanes before the Wednesday accident.
Nemsky said the bridge and interchange project is scheduled for completion in 2012.

Oh boy, I'm gonna haul oversized and make a grip of cash! I don't need ta read or anything, the state gives me my route!

Why are these morons allowed on the road? Is it really that hard to read your atlas? It has all the info you need. Call the state DOT and ask if there is a clearance lower than what you're hauling. They will tell you, including construction projects! I hope I'm not the only one who thinks this is NOT THAT HARD! :biggrin_25510:

I also heard this nasty rumor that they have signs on these bridges telling you how high they are. :biggrin_25523:

you guys obviously dont haul oversize. bridges are marked wrong OFTEN. even when they are correct, it is verrrry stressfull with everything to look out for hauling over dimensional loads, a guy misses one thing and major damage results. if it was so easy, everyone would do it. it pays good for a reason. As for DOT heling you...HA! They can't do their own job right, let alone help us do ours.

Plus for IL unless it was over 11' wide , IL doesnt give you routes to run. I had to turn around due to the same thing one day

I can show you dozens of bridges that are low and not marked in a truck atlas. I can show you dozens of bridges that aren't marked right. I went under...with a 13'6 truck... a 12'6 bridge a few times, even a 4.0 meter bridge!

^^ But theres also pole cars.

    Pole cars...

I would not want to haul over size. I would not want to have to deal with that stuff. I respect the heck out of the guys that do that stuff.

There have been a lot of oversize with pilot vehicles at the little truck stop near our place lately. Looks like wind turbine towers or something like that. Just looking at how long those things are is enough to make me cringe!

Well I am not gonna bash on the driver but I do agree with people saying he should've planned it better.
To all you oversize haulers I totally respect you guys because I know ya'll DO NOT have it as easy as us normal sized rig drivers have. Not that we have it easy but at least we have a bit less to plan for and around than you guys do.
