Hello all-
I am getting ready to retire from the military after 20 years and want to pursue a trucking career. My plan is to attend a local college CDL course and apply to companies once I finsh up with the CDL class. One company that has my interest is TMC. It looks like the money isn't to bad and the hometime seems fair although I cant find anything on their website about the 7/7 schedule I have read about on the chat boards.
According to TMC's website it looks like they hire for the Houston area. Does anyone out there drive for TMC live anywhere near Houston?
Finally, They (TMC) offer to pay by either mileage or percentage......can anyone advise the advantages of one over the other? Thanks very much.

Mileage- Should give you a consistent paycheck but not any real high ones, and you get paid for every mile you are dispatched (not driven, dispatched).
Percentage- For a guy that can stay behind the wheel and is skilled in time management. You should see higher checks, but occasionally a lower one, and you'll eat some bounce miles.
The preceding are just generalizations, there are of course exceptions based on where someone lives, how good your fleet manager is and driver ability.
Hope that helps, thanks for your service, and congrats on your retirement.OSCBRADLEY Thanks this. -
Pax,
Thanks for the reply, It has been my honor to serve.....I see from your signature that you in fact work for TMC....Do you know anything about what is run out of the Houston area? From what I can tell on the TMC website and from a couple emails with a recruiter there, looks like long haul is all that is available. Recruiter says I will only see home about 50 days a year.....thats almost as bad as being deployed....well kind of....but at least you can call home everyday.....anyway, what are your thoughts on that? does that seem acurate? -
Forgot to ask in my above post......obviously a newbie here......but what is "bounce miles" and "bobtail"? I see those alot but not sure what they mean.....also, when something is refered to as a "Designated run" I would assume that means you run the exact same route day after day for example you pick up a load from company X in Houston, run it to company Y in Dallas then from company Y back to X in Houston and it never changes?
-
not sure about the bounce miles, but bobtail is the rig with no trailor...but anyways real reason im posting is if you look on tmc's website they are not hiring from houston right now :/ i just know this cause i was just looking to see if they were hiring in mine.

Indy-
There are two different maps on the TMC website, one shows no employment in Houston but the other one does, here is the link http://www.tmctrans.com/drivers/hiringmap where are you out of? are you considering TMC? -
hmm...guess your right looks like they are looking for ded. runs there...yea im a laid off ironworker from chicago and the bennies ran up and i got a family so i need a semi decent job with some benefits...just trying to see into a sponsorshiped cdl training course. o yea im from northwest indiana (valparaiso)
-
Sorry to hear about the layoff......I hear you as far as needing to support the family, gotta do what you gotta do......from what I have read it seems TMC is as good as anywhere, Swift sure seems to get a lot of varying opinions but I am also considering them as they "say" on their website that dedicated runs are available to you after you reach 6 months with the company.....i'm thinking hometime would be better being on a dedicated run but I could be wrong. Best of luck to you.

yea i am look either towards tmc or usa truck...i actually have everything set up with usa except for the class date for c1 (just goota set a date with agent) but i wanna make sure its to my best interests before i go ahead and do this...tuff decisions, but yea best of luck to you on your decision as well.

OSCBRADLEY - not sure if they are advertising this right now, but I know they run Pipe out of Houston to West Texas and Wallboard back. They run this as part of their Dedicated Fleet. they also have some day cab with owens corning but those jobs are hard to get. Not sure about the home time in line haul, but Houston has been a good area for TMC historically so not sure why they would tell you only 50 days home per year. Regardless my experience with them if you get in, put in a little time and live in the right area, other opportunities are offered like the Pipe-Wallboard deal. Good luck
