That's one of the things I liked about driving for Ryder. On the rare occasion I had a problem with my truck, the technician would stop whatever they were working on and resolve my problem pronto. Not that I was in a hurry,I was getting paid for every minute I waited.

Many of the techs at my terminal had 20+ years with the company, and I can't recall one of them leaving in the 4 years I was there. It's one of those jobs you just don't quit.

This was also the case with the drivers on my account,I worked with the same 5 drivers the whole time I was there.

As our trucks were slip-seated,they got about 5,000 miles a week, and they were serviced every 20,000 miles. This is a company that knows frequent maintenance is the key to preventing breakdowns.

Another thing I liked about them is they are VERY safety concious.I had weekly safety quizzes, monthly safety tests, and monthly conference calls. All of these I was paid for more than the time I put into them.

Right down to our work boots that they paid for, they had to have a certain kind of slip resistant sole to be approved.Their statistics showed that many driver injuries were being caused by drivers slipping and they nipped this problem in the bud.

At first they allowed 1 pair a year, then they changed it to as needed.I still have 2 pairs of good Red Wings they paid for.

Before I started with Ryder I didn't know much about them, but saw a lot of their trucks on the road, assuming they were being rented or leased. But they have a lot of company drivers and are a top notch company IMHO.

Sounds like they've only got better. The major issue I had at the time was I was active duty Navy working a civilian driving job and the company knew I had to be back at work monday morning. So if I had a breakdown and it was going to take a day or two to fix they would give me a rental tractor so I'd be back at my Navy job. I thought that was pretty cool.

I've only worked for them indirectly as a casual employee in the local Ryder/GM Parts Logistics operation. A complete zoo, meaning it's a 'diversified operation' (adult daycare center). Top pay for full time drivers was $14 per hour when I asked and they were expected to work 5 12 hour shifts when necessary.

Another former acquaintance worked for Ryder in some sort of 'dedicated' flatbed division; he claimed he loved his job and made $50k per year easily. Last time I talked to him and his wife they claimed he had moved over to a better job away from Ryder but they looked to be one step away from moving to the homeless shelter. This couple always had a problem keeping their stories straight anyway.

I applied with Ryder, Penske and Salem at one time or another many years back; never heard from any of them. I did attend a hiring seminar for Salem held many years ago. My impression is they were looking for inexperienced people who never held union membership; probably the same with Ryder and Penske too.:biggrin_25524:

Anyone have anything they can add to this discussion?

I just interviewed with Ryder this morning and I think it went really well. Would be a multi-stop dedicated route that would get me home every night.

I have worked for Ryder Integrated logistics for 6 years. It is, hands down, the best driving job I've ever had. Pay is good, benefits are far better than most, vacation time good (2 weeks first year, 3 weeks after 5 years) and they have work nationwide if you decide to relocate. They are very safety oriented and have some irritating policies in that area but nobody is perfect. If interested, you can go to Ryder.com and click on careers to see what they have in your area.

6 years with Ryder as a company driver. Great place to work. Very safety oriented. Most dedicated accounts in our area are good for $40-70K a year, depending on how hard you want to work. If you are flexible, single or have an understanding family, the pool drivers (fill in on different accounts as needed for vacations etc.) make big bucks.

I was contacted by a Ryder recruiter this evening offering a Flower's Industries(baked goods) run originating out of Knoxville,TN.It covers the eastern half of the 48 and as far west as TX or KS,etc. He said 2-5 days out ,but I always take that with a can of salt.Starting pay only .29/mile,though.That was a big downer.Tops out at .36/mile,which is what I can start for at most other places.Would also have to unload at D.C.'s. He didnt seem to have all his ducks in front of him when I asked my questions. Didnt seem bad, except for the pay...but isn't that why we do this to begin with? Why stay away from home for sub-par pay? Does anyone have any knowledge of these Flower's Industries runs?

no not really. i work for a ryder lease company and our trucks are set at 70. ryder said they cant go any higher bc of legal issues so id imagine their trucks are the same. most of the ryder drivers i know are strictly out and back drop and hooks so 600 miles a day really wouldnt be too hard would just have to stay movin
