Hi All
After spending countless weeks cruising these boards it seems I have only reached one positive conclusion.....all companies seem to have their fair share of issues, both good and bad...I havent come across a single perfect company.
That being said, I believe I will choose Swift to begin my career with (I guess I should say "new career" as I am retiring from the military shortly).
My goals are simple, drive enough to make a decent salary of around $700 a week take home, be able to have a couple days off every two weeks at home......and thats about it.....another reason for choosing Swift is they have a terminal here in Houston so I'm guessing that might help with being able to get home on time (please feel free to chime in if I'm totally wrong on that line of thought, maybe a terminal means nothing). I'm aslo interested in these "comfort zones that Swift offers....thinking of asking for the "purple" one that looks like it runs from Houston to CA. can be seen here...http://swift.drivers-central.com/swift-transportation/images/comfortzones.jpg
Has anyone ever used the comfort zone? are they good/bad? Any input on my plans would sure be most appreciated. Thanks everyone.
My Swift desires

Chief, I am also looking at Swift. This is the first time I have seen the "Comfort Zone" list. Thanks for posting.
I have read about every post on every company over the past year. There are lots of disgruntled employees out there. Seems the first thing people do when they get canned is to post what a horrible place ABC company is to work for. These may or may not be honest accounts.
I spent 20 years in management and have never terminated an employee that they did not give a distorted version of the "Facts" surrounding their termination when they told the story. Some are WAY out in left field.
I figure people are people and as long as I am professional, then there is a good chance that they will be also. The experience of being in the military has trained you, as it did me, to deal with all personality types.
PS, I am in Ohio and also a Navy Vet (SK). -
I just checked swift out here in So. Cal. and they said they do not have the "comfort zones" any more. became too much to deal with, not any worse than any others though, keep us up to date.
"ole sailors never die - they just sail away" -
Skip,
You threw me there for a second....when I signed up on the site I couldnt think of a user name so I went with OSC figuring not many people would know what it meant. More truer words have ever been spoken my friend, ALWAYS BE PROFESSIONAL and it will reward you, I have preached and practiced that throughout my career and it has served me well.
I'm going in with the attitude that a company is as good as what you put in to it so I plan on giving my best to Swift and hopefully they will return the respect.
As far as the comfort zones go, not sure why So. Cal. is doing away with them as wowo6057 is saying......Swift website still highly promotes them. http://www.swifttruckingjobs.com/locations.php -
I met with Swift today and they showed me the same current "Comfort Zones".
Orientation next week.JustSonny Thanks this. -
swift isnt all that bad your going to catch a lot of guff from other drivers cause your slow, and you gotta let it roll off ya. one thing I can tell you if you can run and be on time, you'll be ok. if you can do that they wont mess with you and you'll get your miles and get home.

From what I have heard they seem to be more or less going away from the "comfort zones." They used to have, I wanna say something like like Western 11 which has become "West of the Mississippi." If you wanna run east, you're in luck. It seems most of the drivers want to be over here on the west coast and they are saying they can only have a limited number of drivers in the west and I keep hearing of drivers "getting shipped east." Personally, I drive dedicated up in the Pacific Northwest, it pays a little better because we are paid on a sliding scale (shorter trips = more per mile), but there's less miles and I would say I average about 300 miles a day, give or take. Some days are better than others but for the most part it works out, you just have to be willing to work all the time and sometimes its tough because the sleep/awake schedule can get awkward, its nothing like OTR where you can plan your whole trip days at a time, but I'm home on the weekends if I want to be.

Chances are unless you are on dedicated $700 take home ain't gonna happen.
My mentor # 4 years experience solo not training said "$578 average."
That has been my best so far. Due to stuff happening out of my control. -
I would agree with Rug Trucker. Dedicated is a good way to ensure a "steady" income. The dedicated account I am on doesn't have a lot of miles (there are better out there, just haven't looked into them yet) so the pay is steady but not in the $700 take home range. I also seem to be plagued by "things out of my control" and have a tendency to see-saw on my paychecks (sometimes pretty significantly)

forget $700 a week take home. And you won't get much respect in this industry. You will see!
