ok... I know I sound like a rookie... but... If you run out of diesel is there some sort of secret to getting the fuel system primed back up? I put fuel back in the filters and it cranked for a second but ran crappy and died. Do I fill them up again and again without letting it start? dunno

Fill them up again then start pumping the primer while someone is turning it over.
Your arm is gonna want to fall off when its over! -
The easiest way on top of filling the filters up is starting fluid in the air intake. Pull the air filter out and have an assistant give it a couple second shot followed by a couple more shots if neccesary to keep it running. Don't overdue the spraying it as you don't want the engine racing. The fuel will prime in 5 seconds or so.
-
Be careful with the starting fluid. It will work but don't over do it. You could wreck the engine. just a little dose.
-
leave the starting fluid on the back shelf and put alittle extra effort into it. The best way imo...

I second that Black Dog. just keep priming and opening the bleed screw until all the air is gone. It is not that bad once you figure out how to do it.

unless it is a rental (penske, etc). In that case, who gives a sht...

...or if you have an ISX, just turn the key and wait for it to start.

This one has never taken more than five or ten seconds to fill the filters and fire up. Long way from the old days where changing filters was a major PITA. -
Are you talking about the bleed screw on the injectors?
-
I take it we are talking about your MXS? If it does not have a hand primer, you need to get one. Best way is to loosen the fuel return check valve about three turns, this allows you to pump the fuel through the head and out to the return line without any resistance. Then tighten it back up and pump until hard and fire it it. Good luck
