I use a trick after I fill the fuel filters, I use starting fluid just a bit, but load it with WD 40. After all that is just like what your injectors shoot into the cyclinders.
Works 95% of the time with real quick results. Once in a while, there are engines which want or need the filters done twice.

if i see someone coming at my truck with an either can he better start praying because when i get done with them they will be walking funny with that can stuck where the sun dont shine! 10 years i never put either to my truck that i have now.

if it comes down to use starting fluid best bet is use brake clean its cheaper and easier on the engine

While I have had my differences in the past with this poster, I would agree with him on this subject. Just fill the filters up and squirt some starter fluid in there until the engine sucks up the diesel. While it's probably to late for the following suggestion and while this takes more time then you probably have, take a air fitting tapped into a fuel cap, then use a little air pressure to drive the fuel forward. However be carefull not to use more then 5-10 psi or you could blow the tanks outward or pop a line. If it's too late for now, you should still consider building one for future problems.Last edited: Jul 16, 2010

Thanks for all of your replies. Gotta love this board! Yeah I'm talking about my mxs cat... ok. If you are looking at the main fuel filter there is an aluminum knob on top of it. Is that the pump? I unscrewed it a lil today but never tried pulling on it. Guess I will try that in the morning. Today i pulled the filters off filled them up with diesel and it cranked but ran like crap for a sec then shut off.
From what I've heard is you don't want to get ether anywhere new these new engines. I'm sure you can but I can't afford it if I screw up an engine -
Ran of of fuel... Hey Redd they are paging you... not once, but twice that yard bird ran out of fuel....
I kept telling him E does not stand for enough....

Yes thats the pump unscrew it and pump away. There is also a 7/8 looking bolt beside the pump this is the bleeder. When you get fuel out of it close it up pump till you feel resistance screw the pump handle back in and start the truck. This is another benifit of the FASS it has a pump built in you would just have to open the bleeder with the key on and wait. I dont even fill the filters with fuel when I change them.

My MBN bleeder sounds a little different than your's. Do not use ether I always heard you run the risk of making a diesel addicted to it not to mention the fact that if you or your helper is spray happy you could really f... up your motor. What works for me every time I change/clean filters - make sure both are topped off with fuel - pump the primer about 4 or 5 times, you might not feel any resistance from fuel but dont sweat it if not - have a friend crank the engine - as soon as it's running you bleed it really good then have your friend rev the motor a few times then set your fast idle on 1000 rpms and let it run a few minutes - then put it in gear and ease forward if it sputters, mine never does after bleeding it, jump out and bleed it good again... I always have a shop rag handy when bleeding cause I took a diesel shower the first time I did this lol... My motor starts and runs like a champ on the first try every time do the above...

Hay guys While we talking about diesel engines i have a 1994 5.9 cummins turbo diesel that will only start on a quick spray of starting fluid. After it starts then runs fine. If you shut it back off then try to restart just cranks give it a spray starts right up and runs fine.
Does any one know what this may be. I have had a couple of people tell me it's a bad lift pump?
I need help. I dont' know if this is the right place to post but while were talking diesels i thought i would ask.
Thanks for any help

That and the ops-1 are my next purchases!!! My gauge says the tanks are on E but there is still a lot of fuel in these tanks.
