First- Good to read that all turned out in the end. I would not have lasted with a mentor like that. Not because I lack iron skin (eight years in the military). It would have been due to the fact that I don't get along with people who let a little bit of authority, be it actual or perceived, go to their heads. There are times as a trainer where a little "reinforcement" is required. The key is knowing when it is appropriate, and when it will be EFFECTIVE. Many never figure out where the balance point is. Throw in the monetary perks, and blamo! You wind up with some trainers who are ineffective jags who just want a paycheck.
Second, not related to the origin of the thread...
I like the SLC terminal. The FM there is a good guy. When my first tractor broke down he had no problem getting me moved into a different one so I wouldn't have to sit. The tractor I picked (yep, got to pick) was a mess inside and out. However he gave me a voucher for the nearby truck wash. Tractor was detailed inside and out. Didn't recognize it when all was finished. Some may ask why I picked a filthy truck.. I have a soft spot for Freightshakers. To heck with the volvos.
My Colombia may be older than the Volvo I had. However she pulls better, and does not have near the issues the Volvo did. I too have named my truck.. "Christine". In reference to the story written by Stephen King.JustSonny Thanks this. -

The last company that told me I did not have a choice was when SWIFT took over the drivers for Rite Aid, they told we had to work for them, Well I did not then nor will I ever work for SWIFT. You always have a choice. -
He has been home for a week and goes back out this Friday. The truck he called "the Rolling Turd" actually didn't look too bad inside or out.Of course this is after he has cleaned it. I went to pick him up in Lewiston Id last Wednesday night from Montana and got home Thursday morning. Cause he got his son. Anyway he showed our older kids and I the truck he had. When he goes back he will get a permanent truck. Sorry I haven't kept in touch have been busy.

I am considering entering OTR trucking as a second career. If I am going to be living with a complete stranger for 6 - 8 weeks in a 6' x 8' closet for the duration of the "mentoring" period, I sure will want a trainer who (1) does not smoke; (2) will allow me to shower and shave every day; and (3) will allow me to perform my bodily eliminations (peeing and crapping) as needed; as I care about my personal hygiene and overall health. Is this possible with Swift or any other training company during the mentoring period?
MaximumTexas Thanks this. -
yep to everthing but the shower everyday. sometimes you don't have a choice. My mentor at swift was great
