Close, Yellowknife is still in the Northwest Territories. Nunavut is the "new" territory that took the eastern half of the NWT.

There is nothing dangerous about running Canada other than the wildlife.

As far as the ice roads go, no company is going to send an unqualified driver out on the ice roads. The freight will go to someone like RTL in Edmonton, AB, and be transferred to their trucks for furtherance. Ice roads drivers have very specific requirements and training to do their jobs. Drivers have to be able to effect their own repairs on the side of the road for example as mechanics are a long, long way away. There aren't any shops or service trucks easily available to come out and do repairs for you. Drivers are also restricted to (I believe - it's been a while since I consorted with drivers who do that run) 23 mph on the ice as it (the ice) does move. A truck running out on the ice creates a "bow wave" of ice in front and behind the truck. Drivers have to slow down as they approach the shore line so that the bow wave is allowed to dissapate and the ice won't break up against the shore as the truck approaches.

Thanks Iceman for reminding us just what a delicate dance the "ice runners" do out there. It is an amazing accomplishment isn't it? And I guess as the Arctic continues to warm, will someday be merely an old time legend to some future generations. Next time we have a brew in hand, will raise a toast to the ice runners.

Danger pay here in Canada! How I wish! That is so funny! The most dangerous thing I encounter are 4-wheelers. I would be more afraid to drive in the States from all I've heard. And I don't live in an igloo, I have running water, a TV, a phone, electricity and I even have a cell phone that works! Oh, I do heat with wood. And as far as snow goes, I wouldn't mind seeing a snowfall of more than 3 or 4 inches. Canada is a wonderful safe place to be. :smt039
