Well today my W9 started cutting out of cruise.
Doesnt matter where I set it..60/65/70 ...at a random time,
all of a sudden I hear a blast of air (like from the air tank blowoff) and the cruise cuts out.

Trying to SET it - nothing happens.
If I turn it OFF and then back on - I can SET it fine.

It might work for 4mins or 40mins. When it cuts out, there isnt anything noticeably wrong - all gauges and speedo are reading fine....
Being a Detroit Diesel 60, where do I start with this...anything sound familar to anyone?

I never had this before taking it in (past week) for the annual DOT and A/C repair but I dont see how those are technically really related here...maybe but.. !?

Cruise Control was doing the same on my WesternStar. Some days if would work fine. Other days it would cut out.

There is a switch under the dash, beside the clutch pedal. It has a spring that rests against the clutch pedal. I replaced that switch and It has worked fine since.

Does it work fine when parked and idled up, say 1000rpm? That's all the cruise is good for in a largecar anyway.

The 'fast' idle works...I havent run it more than 10-15mins, but it never dropped out.

Just the cruise does, when rolling....

I would check the clutch switch as someone posted up the page. It is a switch that has a spring that rides against the clutch pedal itself right below the dash, play around with it to see if you here it clicking, and just how much it takes to move away from the pedal till it clicks. If u just barely touch it and it clicks then you need to adj the switch, most have slots that you can slide it a little to make better contact with the pedal. Hope this helps.

This idea (as mentioned before) seems a worthy thing to check.
Since when it DOES work, it DOES work.

What the #### is the rush of air purge I hear as cruise drops out though?

Thanks to all who responded so fast. I love this forum! :biggrin_25514:

Do any of the switches in the truck work off of air pressure?

PSSSSHHHHT - then cruise dies. HA :biggrin_2556:

my money is on the clutch switch right now. Could be the transmission connector or sensor as well....

I just checked..I see the switch and hear it. My clutch has 1.5" of free play but the switch 'clicks' with about 1-2cm of movement on the pedal. I might adjust it or just replace it since I'm in there anyways but 1-2cm before it clicks is too 'tight'.

You can press the pedal with 1 finger and hear it click almost instantly.

I have used rubber bands to hold the clutch peddle up and make the cruise work until I could get the truck to the shop,...

Just a simple cheap "fix",....that might tide you over until you want to spend the money,...
