I thought since the urea was injected into the DPF, it was supposed to do away with the regeneration. Maybe I'm wrong, wouldn't be the first time.

There are two cans on a 2010 truck (if that truck doesn't say international on it). The DPF is a separate can than the SCR. Urea is injected after the DPF and before the SCR.
The DPF still needs to use diesel fuel to regenerate, however regenerations are reduced because with the SCR the engine can run less EGR, higher combustion and exhaust temperature, which ultimately means higher NOx output all of which mean less particulate, and fewer regenerations. -
So no-one has any real experience with these engines other than a bunch of engineers and executive suits patting themselves on the back about the great fuel economy?

Europe has been using SCR for several years now. Both Detroit Diesel (as part of mercedes) and Cummins have years of SCR experience because they work in the european market. SCR is also used on power plants the world 'round.
The DPF was and continues to be the hardest thing to figure out on a truck. Europe gets DPFs in 2013 with Euro VI emissions. -
I never used to care if the truck looked sweaty and dirty as long as I didn't ! I was always a bottom line driver. I am more interested in a fat bank account than I ever was in washing trucks and shining chrome for nuthin! I was always pretty good at keeping the inside clean. I like to take my shoes off when I'm inside and not get my socks dirty! I get to stay at home now and sure am glad I'm home with momma and am only called on for advice occasionally.Gettin old and sick aint no fun but it does have a few perks.

But isn't that the primary reason for buying a truck anyway.... to make a buck? I would much rather put money into a high class muscle car if I wanted to go for the looks. The truck is a tool to get a job done. I just never fell in love with trucks to the level of being in awe of chrome and stacks and big front ends. I just want them to be reliable and make my work as easy as possible and help me make AND keep as much as I can. The only thing I worry about regarding looks on my truck is cleaning it up regularly and doing touch up paint and such to keep it from looking like a piece of junk. I have so much lack of interest in the high brow classy show trucks that I even handed back the free Shell Rotella Truck Calender that my tire and oil supplier gave me and I can't remember the last time I ever looked at one of the truck cards they stick on the back sheet of my Cat scale printouts.
I have other hobbies I can waste money on. If someone likes putting there money in a truck, that's cool. But don't expect everyone else to oooh and aaah over the time and money you put in it. If it doesn't make or save me money, it doesn't go on my truck, with the exception of creature comfort items. -

When I walk threw a yard full of trucks the ones that impress me are the ones that have been greased, have grease on there 5th wheels, their brakes are adjusted. They are clean, engines have no oil leaks, Drive line show signs of having throwing grease in the past.
Some guy with fancy chrome, and lights on every space available, does nothing for me. I had a customer that had lights installed inside the frame rails so if he broke down he could turn them on and see that impressed me.
I believe that the knowledge the engine manufacturers have gained, and the technology may for once be beneficial. Time will tell!
