you mean to tell me that peterbuilt...who is supposed to be a top of the line truck....would put an electrical box on the out side of the truck??? what was the engineers smoking when they came up with this???
-
just like what i have, i've been inside of mine as well. fairly simple design.Gears Thanks this. -
Suggestion!!!!! Explore West Marine. Lots of electrical "stuff" that is designed to survive in a salt water enviroment. Their heat shrink, junction boxes, stainless hardware is about all that I will use in our "road" enviroment.
-
some good stuff, because the 387 is totally different in the electrical system than any other pete on the road. I worked with a guy at our pete dealer that denton tx actually called him to come look at the design and blueprints of the whole truck before they ever started production. when they got to the electrical plans he pointed out and told them everything that would not work in the real world, 1 being that very box, yet they changed about 3 things he told them about and left the rest as they were. He asked them the same thing, "what are you smoking and where can I get some, because I will need it when I start fixing these trucks after they been on the road a couple years".

The "stuff" that "they" use on the roads will be the "stuff" that "they" use on the roads regardless of what we think & KNOW will cause failures. "Ours in NOT to reason why, ours is but to do or DIE" welcome to the maintianenance side of the world of the
truckin' " world!!!! -
trust me I know all about the maintenance side, I'm a part time driver full time diesel mechanic, so it doesn't matter what we know will or will not work, its what the high paid pencil pushers that get paid big bucks to come up with what looks good on paper.

This saga has a happier ending then what could have been. It was discovered that the main power going to the box was kaput. Power was leaving the main panel but by the time it got to the box...nothing. I ran fuse protected line from the batteries to the box and problem solved.
I also took pretty much everything out of the box, cleaned it up and added dielectric grease.
Peterbilt said I needed a new power box as did other mechanics. Not so... at least so far. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

Gears--
I am thinking of getting a 387 with CAT c-15 with about 550K miles on it. I can find nothing positive about the 387 on this board so I am hesitant about going with that instead of the Kenworth T600 (my first choice but none in my price range). What issues besides the above electrical problem have you had? What have you spent in maintenace costs since you've gotten it? thanks!
