Private pilot with some CB questions

At the peak of the solar cycle, the CB band will be open from before daylight until afterdark to places all over the globe, not just the US of A.

 

I did read many years ago about CB in aircraft. And and it said to mount the antenna upside down under the plane. This way the signal would be sent back to the earth. You wouldn't need a very long antenna. Because of the height you will be when flying. I don't think I would want a midland antenna. I would go with a fiberglass one.

 

It does depend a lot upon the cycle though. There have been some real duds. I haven't checked for the update on this one coming up, but I've a lot of reports about the very low sunspot activity.

 

Yes it does happen at times, but I think you would admit it's not an everyday occurance.

 

A handheld is fine, as far as the FAA goes, though I'd still check it out on the ground to make sure it doesn't diddle with the avionics. Once you "install" the unit, you're bucking the displeasure of the FAA, as they get real sticky about installing non-approved parts in your plane. They'll ground the plane, and even lay some hefty fines on you.

I worked as an airplane mechanic during a lull in my trucking career, and we had to be muy careful that *everything* installed in the plane be Approved, and installed per whatever instructions were approved by that organization.
If you mount a bracket in your plane, and attach a CB, it's Installed.

I fly a Cherokee 180 and a Cessna 172, but I'm seriously considering one of the Experimental designs, as the rule gives you a lot more freedom when it comes to equipment, and gosh, some of those planes are just frickin' COOL. The Bearhawk comes to mind as something that a CB would be right at home in.

Don't have a clue but the CB shops are advertising free checks all the time and some have fresh coffee for you while you wait.
