You don't know it yet, but your trainer is a sub par moron. I never said you need to down shift all 13 gears, that's extremely unrealistic, and I certainly never implied any such thing. The transmission included in your company provided truck is a tool. That tool not only helps you gain speed, but helps you reduce speed as well. How unfortunate you have yet to realize this.
Had you been taught the correct way to downshift from the beginning you would have ZERO problem downshifting with a smooth bore tanker. You can sit beside me with your eyes closed and NEVER know when I downshift. Done correctly (and its not that tough) you cant hear it or feel it.
Spoken like a true holder of the steering wheel. Guys like you assume no responsibility in truck maintenance longevity, but Ill #### well bet when your truck brakes down you'll scream bloody murder like no other.
Fuel is made to burn, and brakes are made to stop, to hell with the rest of it. Well chief, when its payday and your little pay check wont carry your family till next week, I will guarantee you the fleet operator you work for has adjusted your rate of pay to directly reflect the abuse you and others like yourself have inflicted on that company equipment over the years.

You know i'm in training locally in indiana, right? It's not like we're going down grades.
So you're telling me that downshifting 5 to 7 gears before stoppign isnt good enough? I have to downshift all 13, right? Even though i only upshifted 11 or so? -
First Go FIND a BULL Hauler with a load of Fat Girls, make sure you print this off and hand it to him ok,
Cow poke take this fella put him behind the wheel, drop the seat on the floor so he can feel the wagon, now every time he rocks the truck shifting hit him in the nuts with the prod, if he misses a gear rap his knuckles with your belt buckle, and every time them fat girls slam into the jailhouse zap him again.
Ok I was poking some fun at you there but in reality you needed to laugh, you are most likely over thinking this thing, Shifting is not that hard and when you relax enough and take your time it will just fall into place.
But if you do go out and find a bull hauler to show you to shift, I advise you don't piss yourself, that darn prod will light your balls up the second time, if you watch a lot of drivers when they take off the rock the hell out of a truck, not a good thing, when you see one "gliding away " from a light well he is doing it right.
Tankers, livestock haulers have "moving" cargo therefore being able to shift and downshift like silk is essential, if you ever have a co driver Shifting smooth is essential to good sleep. Mine (was also my wife at the time) shifted like silk , and I used to mess with her when she was in the bunk, the occasional jerk or yank and well it was days before i got any, so think of it like this, You relax, quit fretting it it will come naturally in time.
BluesTech Thanks this. -

Maybe you should just be still for a while and learn.

I'm not the smartest guy in the world. And by no means do I think I'm chocked full of experience. But if you don't use your tranny to slow down and just ride the brakes, you're an idiot. You are just asking for trouble. I've watched some of the dump truck drivers around here literally catch their brakes on fire. But then the county/state will hire just about any moron who shows up. lol

Ever heard the saying "better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool, than open your mouth and remove all doubt". Even though you've been proven wrong at every turn you just continue on, don't ya? -
When you shift the splitter into the lower gear and let off the gas, it starts freewheeling until you rev it up so that the RPM will match the lower gear in the splitter. When everything is right, it goes into gear by itself.
