US- Canada border crossing at Niagra Falls

Discussion in 'Questions From New Drivers' started by Firehound, Jul 26, 2010.

  1. I will be crossing into Canada Wed. Morning in a utility truck. What should I expect to have to go through at the border? (work visa, fuel taxes, truck inspection?????)

(crossing at Niagra Falls. Buffalo, NY to Toronto, ON)

    Thanks y'all!!

It depends on what you're doing and with what. Are you leaving something there as in a delivery? Are you doing some kind of work there? You're asking a pretty broad question, however, it sounds like you may be stuck at the border for a long time.
I can tell you, you will need your passport, proof of ownership of the vehicle, proof of insurance. Your vehicle is subject to inspection just like any highway inspection here. It probably won't happen, but it might.
If you are going there to do service work, you will need proper work papers. If you are delivering a load, depending on what it is, you will be required to have it released thru a brokerage firm. If you don't arrange that in advance, you may be there from a couple hours to several days.
If it's food products of any type, it will require an FDA inspection and release to show there are no bugs.
You see, there are a lot of things to consider.
By the way, if you are crossing with work tools and don't plan to use them, they may decide not to believe you and take those tools into "protective custody" until you return.

  5. I am just dropping off a railroad inspection truck and flying out the next day.... (some other crew will actually be doing the work...)

If you've EVER been arrested, even for a 20 year old misdemeanor or DUI, you may never make into Canada in the first place......Canada is linked with Interpol, which has a record of pretty much every breath you've ever taken since you came out of the hole.

Also, do not bring a laptop with you unless you want to spend some time waiting while they search every file on it for kiddie porn.
They do not care if you pass thru 5 times a week, they may check every time.

I used to cross almost daily some where between Ontario, and the U.S. In a big truck usually. In my fourwheeler, and even in aircraft. At all times I had my laptop with me in full sight. I never was asked anything about it, ever. Ya, I've had my truck gone through, and my fourwheeler as well, on both sides. I've had the big truck xrayed more times than I can remember. And really, it wasn't that big of a deal. You'd think as many crossings as I've done going both ways, I would have run into one of those "big deal" times. Now, that was done for just short of 2 years running, and still crossed intermittently all my driving life.
I guess the key is to not do anything to stick out. Be decent to customs, and they're usually decent right back, except the U.S. side in Detroit.
I've had times that there were problems with my paper work, but it didn't take over an hour to straighten it out, and I was gone.

Sounds like you may be with CN? The OP that is. If not, it really doesn't matter. You'd think a rail company would have their act together and be willing to help you.
If you start having trouble, tell the customs guy this isn't something you do every day, and really don't know the drill. Just stay calm, and answer the questions, if any, truthfully.
    It's no big deal!!:biggrin_25525:
