.1 gallons a hour??? I didn't think any of them claimed to be that efficient. I have seen some claiming .2 and hour and talking to drivers that keep good fuel records before and after it seams more like .3 to .4 and hour is a more realistic. Not to bash you or anything but I also think the electronic motors use less than a gallon at idle also, but I could be wrong.

Exactly. My hubby only runs his when he needs it. The fridge and microwave will cause him to run it when its comfortable out. But he usually shuts his off, opens his vents and plugs in his fan when he's sleeping. The fridge doesn't pull that much from the batteries in the amount of hours that he sleeps.

I understand that I also run a fridge and my batteries will last more than 10 hours on a charge and start the truck just fine. I have nothing against APU's I just will not spend the money to purchases one at there current price when I can come up with a cheaper alternative. I also will not run mine when the weather is nice it just seams to be wasting money, but that is just me and to each there own. The O/P said something about not wanting to spend alot of money and this is just what I did and do and it might not work for everyone.bullhaulerswife Thanks this.

My first backwoods APU in 1998 was a 4kw Coleman generator and a 5k walmart window unit that I cut and pasted into my 42 inch flat top sleeper. I used 5 gallons every 24 hours to keep cool in temps as high as 117 degrees. Now in my condo, I use a Honeywell I-2000, which is a 2kw generator and a 6500 btu walmart window a/c, and it uses 3 gal ever 24 hours of run time. So yes, you can be very comfortable on 0.125 gallons an hour.
My tractor uses .7 gallons on hour when idling, so I can run my backwoods setup for 5.5 hours, for the same amout of fuel the truck uses in 1 hour. Plus I can replace the generator and a/c for less than $500. For the $8500 some want for a APU, I'd buy myself a used 96 inch custom sleeper with shower, stove and bathroom and still cool it with my backwoods APU.Last edited: Aug 1, 2010
