CRST treats you like pretty much any trucking company would treat you. Until they know you, and you are proved to be someone they can use, you're just an number. Even after you're proven, you still have to be careful with them. What are you expecting?
When you're new, they treat you like an ignorant slave (which ain't far from the truth, the overwhelming majority of cases). And when you've been there a while (and I don't mean a couple of months), they treat you more like the experienced driver and employee that you are...just like they did me all those many years ago.
It's all about expectancies...if you're a brand new, inexperienced driver, and you don't know anything about the industry and a lot about how things are (and that you're not going to change), then you're probably gonna be shocked--a sort of culture shock. But if you're already experienced, nothing will come as any great shock. But that's what you'd get anywhere.
With regard to CRST's idle policy, I'd have to say it's just like any other trucking company's: they discourage idling when not necessary. The good news is, CRST trucks tend to not sit long enough to worry too much about idling. We do mainly LTL freight that has to MOVE! And we don't sit around. If, however, you find yourself sitting somewhere...oh, at the Fontana yard, for instance...and it's over 100 degrees and those convection currents are sweeping across there (as they almost always do in the summer), no one expects you to sit there in that and just get happy. Of course, you can run the truck. But they don't want you sitting in the yard at Cedar Rapids when it's 60 degrees with a light wind, and be idling in a situation like that. Just use your good judgement. Only 75 of the trucks have APU's, though...and actually, some of those are probably off the fleet, now.

I don't get treated like a number at my company. I call them and tell them my first name and they know who i am.
CRST wants your idle below 10%. They dont get you the loads, therefore you idle, therefore you get yelled at for it. -
temptinfates i can tell you one thing about crst yes they will show you how to chain up in orientation but I never did once.I always shut it down if I thought it too dangerous and the only thing I had to hear about was my co driver ######## to me,but he was a serious ###.so far as the schooling goes I just don't know because I already had my cdl when I went in.

by the way, don't ever go solo company driver.if they don't bring it up in orientation ask the guy who's giving it in front of the class about them paying you about 20 cpm if you're co driver quits on you.happened to me and they didn't bother telling anybody, that's when i put in my two weeks.
Everett Thanks this. -
