BTW if its a 2 wire then everything reads from that one. If you have 2 sensors then the speedo reads from and the ECM reads from the other. The goofy ones have 4 wires and one sensor. Vocational trucks have them lots of times

had it 1 time on a series 60 where 1 of the contacts on the ecm was losing connection and the cruise would kick off, easy fix after it was found just undid wire harness from ecm and sprayed contact cleaner on the contacts and plug harness back in problem solved

That seems easy enough...ECM is on the driver's side of the engine and fairly easy to get to. Looks like 2-3 harnesses on it. Once I have the batteries out this am, I will remove each harness 1 by 1 and blast it with CCleaner, then reassemble. Nothing to loose there but a few minutes....as Long as I dont break any of the plastic snap parts the keep everything together...

This one has (4) wires coming from it. It's an Eaton RTLO-16913A.

that air purge you hear could be the turbo stall if the cruise is on and you have high boost when the cruise kicks off abrubtly.

Lucky you. That style of sensor splits the feed for one to the ECM and one side to the truck speedo.

How hard is it to replace this thing?
Does it just unscrew and re-install? - Anything special to set it or adjust it?

This unit (4 wire) looks like its weather sealed and may explain the need for a new $54 harness. Anyone have any ideas if the 4wire harness tails out to additional connectors up stream?

I am trying hard to figure out what the trouble is and I am down to the speed sensor and/or wiring harness. The trouble started soon after the techs worked on the TRANS TEMP sensor and then cleaned the underside.

My fast idle works fine and adjusts fine and holds. So what else could this really be I wonder? :biggrin_25524:

Here is a recap on what has been done so far...

    1. Replaced the cruise on/off switch on the dash.
    2. Replaced and adjusted the clutch kickout-switch.
    3. Removed wires from ECM. Cleaned and reinstalled.
    4. Free up the foot brake valve.
    5. Located the 4wire speed sensor. Disconnected each tail and ran
electrical contact cleaner several times. Mated and re-cleaned.
    Solid connection.

..If cruise even sets, it still will eventually quit.
Can be 5 mins or 15mins. Sometimes it wont even set...

What else can we check? - what other component is left?
Think it might be the speed sensor itself? Maybe the set/resume switch?

The speedo never falters as the cruise kicks out but there are 2 tails
    off of the speed sensor.

...Not sure where to go next...

Most of them have a 13mm headed bolt through a clamp that holds the sensor in. Usually you have to melt them out with a torch because they are rusted into place.

Try this- unplug one side of the sensor and drive the truck. If you get no speedo then that side feeds the speedo. If you get a check engine code then that side feeds the ECM. You may get a check engine code either way but try to isolate which one goes to where.

Some trucks have a cruise control park brake switch. If that switch goes bad you have no cruise. I have to say it really sounds like you have a wiring issue not a switch issue. I think you have a wire rubbed through and grounding out, that would give you have the problem you have.

    I'll ask a co-worker who a detroit genuis ab0out this
