Chralb--you are on the right track. In your scenarios, it seems the choice is haul some short loads or wait for something better to come along. As a COMPANY driver you will almost always be better off to take work over sitting. If you have a driver manager that is worth his salt, this will work in your benefit. That being said, don't be a doormat. Most dispatchers are not that good and will take the easy way out. If you are the guy that always takes the garbage loads without complaining, you will continue to see those garbage loads. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with making your dispatcher aware that the 3 50 mile runs just ate your entire driving shift; you took one for the company now it is time for reciprocation. If you get stiffed, remember it.
You bring up a good point about realizing the stress the dispatchers are under. In 2009, when there was no decent freight anywhere, my drivers were awesome. When they were sitting they didn't make it too tough on me. They knew I was doing everything I could to come up with work. On the other hand, if your dispatcher is doing a poor job of planning your runs there is nothing wrong with bringing this up. Just do it in a constructive, fact based way. Don't get all hot and bothered and cussing. That doesn't do anyone any good.
When I am asking my drivers to do something...I usually just put it out there. For example, take a load to Chicago on Friday (short load, Chicago traffic, usually already have 2200 miles in). They will usually tell me they don't want to do it. To which I will counter "will you do it if I need it done." They always tell me they will. Then I keep looking to find that driver that can use the extra miles. Nothing goes further than telling a driver, thanks for being willing to help, but you have tomorrow off.
PS...you need to find a good small firm ASAP or these large companies will crush your great spirit.

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

Hello Cpape..Sorry about some of your replies, but you know truckers..They call me Shakey and I see you're out of Dubuque,Ia..I've trucked ( SSD now) some in my life and can honestly tell you that I've had 2 awesome owners, Beckman Distribution out of Carlisle,Il. and Howells Motor Freight out of Charlotte,NC..
From my point of view, smaller is better.. BUT..all things being equal, a driver has to earn the right to be top dog with a top dog outfit..In one of the companies, I ran in the top 5 for miles for several years; earned all of the bonuses they offered year after year; made top money and had top truck (Freightshaker with stand-up bunk house and top-speed (thats my secret)..the other I wasen't there long due to illness, but I was headed in the same direction on a fast track..Thanks for posting..Your message was refreshing..Shaky -
cpape, I do believe you are the kind of outfit my hubby would be looking for if something were to happen to this company, and that says alot!

Thank you very much, GuysLady! I am here on a learning mission. What makes these OTR drivers tick?

Only telling the truth..
As for your question, I haven't figured that out yet. And I am married to one...
I can tell you one thing that makes him stick with this company so much... His boss and I are actually good friends. I can sit down to coffee and M & M's with his boss any time I want to. His door is always open to any of his drivers, and I am more than welcome there... -
Yeah I'm looking for something regional in Florida if possible. No 65mph trucks either ..I have a clean class A (SafeDriver) no accidents ever.. I'd be a great driver to have on your team.

They wonder why us "newbies" are confused, we have total BS slinging at us from all sides. It either insurance won't let them hire us............or they will suck us in and "use" our new CDL! This industry is nothing if it isn't two faced!

I never did get the thing with Chicago. That's one of the best places to get a load out of almost immediately. Heck, one place up there has big signs posted, "IF YOU NEED A LOAD COME INTO THE OFFICE. WE HAVE LOADS GOING EVERYWHERE." You don't even have to call first, just show up and see what they've got. Guaranteed load every day except sunday.
And Chicago ain't nothing compared to Atlanta. Those lunatics will pass you in the grass on the highway. I hate Atlanta. -
Thank you sir, that's great advice and being the giving soul I am, I probably would become a doormat. (Lord knows I have in the past) I thought a "not so good" D/M would be the exception, not the rule. I will watch for this.
I'll won't claim I've never been upset (although rare), but that simply isn't my way. I completely agree it solves nothing.
Well, I've just been accepted to W/S and I start the 10 day orientation on Monday the 16th in Conover NC. There is no trainer after orientation so I should be rolling soon. In all my research, I've found little negative and a fair amount of positive so I hope this an outfit I can stick to and grow with.
I know the pay is rather low per mile but I've read the miles are good. I accepted a long time ago that I'm once again starting at the bottom rung (amazing actually...LOL) and I'm happy to have the shot at proving myself. So as long as I can survive, I'm content.
To your point sir? That will never happen. If what I've been through in my life hasn't already crushed my spirit, nothing can. I simply can't accept the actions (or words) of others to change the core of who I am. -
I'd work for you if you hired out of West Virginia. Let me know and I'll do an app.
