In the flats, cruise is better, in the rolling hills and mountains drive with out it.

Many engines are set up to have more power and torque with the cruise than without it. That being said, you learn to run the machine to it's best advantage for you.

You can do better by letting the truck slow down cresting a grade and regaining the speed with less power being used going down the other side.

The half mpg doesn't surprise me, I have noticed a similar saving running in hills without the cruise.

Cruise wastes fuel on flat ground too. Drive by your boost gauge in the flats and keep it low.
