Is it crazy to begin driving trucks when you are 66 yrs old? Two school districts turned me down for school bus driver training. I got the CDL permit - so what now? It's like being all dressed up for the dance and she says "no".

What do you think? Should I be grateful and hang it up or go to truck driving school.

I still need to learn about navigating the forum. However, I do feel encouraged.

I'm 56 and I was just assigned my first truck (Swift Transportation). I went to the Swift Academy, then did the required OTR training with an experienced driver for 6 weeks. When I "tested out" after the 6 weeks there was a new driver who was also testing out at the same time I was. That man was at least 65 years old and didn't get around too good. But, he did it! He got assigned a truck and was dispatched on a load before I was.

    Do it!

No reason why not! Retirement is over rated, I know I'll be working until I die, sitting on my butt doing nothing gets old fast.

My dad started truck driving at about age 55, he's 61 now and still going at it.

My goodness! What can I use for an excuse now?
One advantage is that I will have social security coming in when the pay for a newbie may not be very good. I got to hand it to the dedication that a young driver with a family has to muster up to get started.

there is a local driver here in OKC that delivers to a grocer almost every day who was 69 years old...I worked with a 72 year old who I swore didn't look like he could be 63 yet.
