Rollover, that is some of the most spot on advice I've ever seen! Now, if you can get even half of the people that find themselves in the position of quitting BFI to heed this advice you'll have been sucessful.
Half a Load Thanks this. -
In 7 yrs and 800,000 to 850,000 miles of driving I only drove for one DAC reporting company.
The almight DAC doesn't scare me since I wouldn't normally drive for a large company.Mossberg5 and Half a Load Thank this. -
Believe it or not, once in the last 10 years and only twice in the 5 before that but one was to move back here to Springfield and the company was ok with it as he didn't do much this side of the Mississippi then he freaking died just over a year later so it didn't matter as there was no one to "pass" the ball to!
This is a copulation of my experience from quitting TA in 2003 and from helping a few others with information that they used and it worked plus some such as the letter of termination is what most "headhunters" or job gurus tell! And it's an industry standard with white collar workers! In fact yahoo did an article on "how to quit" and well some of the "office crapola" I had in there they said to do!
Yeah, some of these BFI's think they don't have to acknowledge a "letter" from a driver! They have this disdain that one would actually quit driving for a BFI they are so obsessed with their high and mighty inflated self worth as the owners and CEO's think at half of these low life companies!
It's gotten where it's our word against theirs and I'll take your word over a DAC crapola report any day!
It's all Cover your Arse and you have to do it the best you can! And even telling them it needs to be done to protect your reputation doesn't hurt! At least let them know you aren't dumb and dumber! The proof that the truck was there, the condition of the truck, the letter all proves that you "followed" the rules of TERMINATING" your employment and didn't go off half ####ed and threaten anyone, leave the load in BFE, the POS was clean and in good working order and all the other stuff you need to do to as I said to protect your virginity from being slighted by some moron safety, human resources, ceo, owner or other person that knows just enough about trucking to get in trouble!
These should be the RULES we need to follow! Let your friends you know who are about to "quit" errr "Terminate their employment nicely!" If you have never had something nice to say this is the one time you need to do it even though I and the rest of us know you so desperately want to choke some moron to the ground that so really needs it! QUIT NICE! ERRRR it really makes the hair stand up on my neck to say that!

Most of us like to have medical insurance and don't want to drive illegal.
-
How did you get no medical insurance and driving illegal from that post? ASSume?

Well put rollover! The amount of time spent to document everything before leaving, and resigning in writing can really pay off. The office grunts hate it when you deal with them the way they deal with you.
-
Try to stay home long enough to get that last check.
Also call the car rental places. Sometimes you can catch a deal on a compact that's just as cheap as a bus. I talked to a driver that got one for $72 just because they wanted the car relocated to where he lived. Most companies will give you around $100 to get home.
33% of truck companies subscribe to DAC. Most are the bigger ones. But before it's over with, that's all that will be left. Protect your DAC.
There are two companies I work for more than once. Don't burn any bridges. You never know. -
I've quit my share of companys over my 11 years of driving..the one that to this day still on my Dac to this day happened back in 04...I quit without notice.. cleaned the truck out there at the yard and took my happy arse home.. here's why I quit after being on the road for a month stright I build up 4 days off I took them 4 days off with my g/f at the time. after 4 days I came back to work. I was on my way to maryland to pick up my load & take it to Indiana on my way to the pick up my g/f calls me to tell me her father just passed away & would like me there for the funeral. I said not a problem since my load was going right passed the yard anyway in Ohio. this all happened on a monday afternoon. my load was due on thursday. I was driving I got a call from dispatch on Tuesday telling me I just came off hometime & they had no one to cover the load so I had to take it no matter what..I was ticked. in the end I delivered my load early & turned around & said typed I QUIT in the moron box & drove the the 230 miles back to the Ohio yard & cleaned the truck out & went to my g/f's father funeral..
