CondoCruiser- you are so right. Once the options are figured out then things start smoothing out. I recently had a 25 mile on route that I followed when I should have just gone to the next exit wich I ended up passing as I returned from my $3 toll saving 25 mile on-route.
I just don't know when to make the choice to go out of route and make the more effecient choice. Heck I've been lost twice and made my own loop to get back on track and no one has said a word... lol

As long as your routing isn't too far off they won't say anything.
-
will just show up on your monthly report card... they like 5-7% out of route

Well, after reading your excellant posts for routing options I'm fearing for my life..... I believe I will now purchase a REGULAR 2010 atlas and have both.... Just starting out I will have NO KNOWLEDGE of where I am being sent except the Trip Planning skills and learned jugement my trainers/ mentors have instilled into me..... Yes... I have the 465T and (2) Atlases, and a Smart Phone and LAP TOP with Google Earth and Garmin mapping software 2010 and Map Quest and the GREY dense MATTER between my ears to figure out how to save myself and my 75ft craft. It seems to me (no expierance yet) that this is the most difficult part of the job. Planning... I'm not taking away from the physical /mental part of driving but if I make a wrong direction choise it could add up to BiG Fines $$$$ This is so scary to a new student.... I need to NOT LET THIS HAPPEN to me...... Routing SKILLS!!!!!!!!! I have the Lap Top too but 99% of the time I expect NO INTERNET CONNECTION.... I guess its ATLAS and CALL the customer.... Are all customers friendly and helpful? My better judgment says "NO Kid"..... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... I have anxiety........ I'm not even in school yet and am worried about getting lost...... ROUTING SKILLS 101.... Thanks to all you who help with the posts..... The troopers are waiting just for me.... but I only have a dollar 50 and some peanut butter...

hell, with this new system, i check it via my gps and road atlas, it will put you in some B.F.E. downtown. just cause it doesn't have restrictions doesn't mean you should be driving in it, hell about 2 weeks after putting it into use, i was not dodging cars on tight turns but light poles and houses! lol

I just always make sure when i get some screwed up area or go out of route i fill out the feedback report on that trip and let them know about it and why. at least then its documented.Belleye Thanks this.

just wondering how the routing system works, i have had plenty of times where i am on some road almost parrallel with a major highway, im doing 55 tops, stoplights, and i see the road next to me going 65. wierd, i have had it make me pass an interstate that goes right to my consignee, then route me down a state road with 8 miles of stoplights, then the last 30 at 55mph, then meeting up with the interstate i passed, is it just something in the computer? i can see if it was a toll but it wasnt. i was on 80 the tollway for 600 miles, then the last 40 it had me go off and do stoplights and stuff for an hour, then meet back up at 80 to hit gary, is that a toll saving issue?
not complaining, (not really) i like my company, i make more than at my last job, just curious. how much leeway do we have, usually i dont have much time i just route it out and go, but how much do the dispatchers listen if we call and say "hey, this road is a half mile from an interstate, maybe a mile or two extra, but would save fuel from not having an hour of stoplights"? -
Just stay on the interstate. The routing system goes by miles, not by driving time. This is why the system will route you off the interstate onto a 2 lane for 30 miles just because its saves 5 miles. Or why it will route you on roads that really aren't meant for semi trucks to go down.wulfsbergvw Thanks this.
