I was not even thinking when I responded to this one. You have 3 extra hours during your 14 to take naps, fuel & potty breaks etc.
If you could change the Logs?

biggest thing i heard from the instructors at school was "i wish we could drive 5 rest 5 drive 5....like we used to"
-
LOL that 3 hours gets burned up fast by dealing with dispatcher, customers/receivers, scales, fueling, pretip, I could go on and on and on...
3 hours may seem like enough but its not.. -
If we could only log it like we ran it without the threat of fines and violations, it would be a win win for us and the DOT. I feel like the only reason that the newHOS were pushed on us anyway was so that companies could push there drivers harder and make them work longer hours without taking breaks, thus increasing productivity and revenues.
I see no other benifit in being forced to work 14hrs straight. Safety never was a concern when these laws were passed. Revenue for the companies and the DOT were the culprits behind these laws. With all of the variables that occur in a drivers day, these new HOS rules make it extremely un-safe to run legal at times. -
i heard that lil'daddy!!! the fact that you can be on duty after driving 11 for GOD knows how long and continue after a (10 hour) break... but not be on duty 2-3 hours then drive 11 is rediculous!!!

Yeah but a 2 hour break during a 14 hour period allows you the pre-trip, post-trip & fuel. The dispatcher thing, well I would not start logging until you are ready to take off. You can talk to your dispatcher while on your 10 hour break, if sending messages consitently during a 10 hour break then it would not constitute as a 10. Yes waiting for dispatch is on line 4, but if you are free to do what you want while you wait then it can be sleeper or off duty.
But I know what you mean, I really really do! It depends on the day. I wish you all had the 5 & 5 to! It made no difference to me in explaining like they said it would be easier to explain split breaking, but I am here to say we still have to explain it all the same way!

I liked the old system of hrs because I could run Balt to Sea back to Spokane then Missoula and take a day off to do laundry wash my wagon and rest. The new system stinks if you get laid over 10 hrs from the house.

I'v thought about this a thousand ways and they all suck. I agree with lildaddy basicly but I know alot of guys can't be trusted to work that way.
To start with I'd break it into 12 hour shifts say 8am to 8pm as one just to pick a number. That way our driving shifts are not constantly revolving. this is my biggest problem with the rules. And I say if I can be on duty for 12 hours I should be able to driver those 12 if I can. -
I know I am new here. I think that the 70 hrs should be gone.. I also think that the ontime duty should not go agianst your 70 hrs, (waiting on loading, or unloading). Pretrip, fueling, and such sure onduty for 70hrs, if used. 11 hours driving time ok. Now you take what ever time you need for sleeper berth, adding to 10 hrs. Just my thoughts..

That may work for otr drivers but you have to lok at the ltl companies and such where the driver is also the dock worker. If you made the laws like that you would have companies workign the driver 8 hours and then sending them out to drive. Not good
Alot of the rules go thisway, it sounds god from one point of trucking but if you look at it from a different perspective it sudenly makes no sense. I think there should be seperae rules for seperate sectors of trucking. something like otr truckload, local, ltl, tanker, etc
that seems to me to be the only way to come up with rules that fit each aplication. It'd probably be a mess as you'd have to learn new rules if you went to a different sector but it seems to work to me
