My wife and i were on our way back from town when we heard a plane spitting and sputtering. We looked up and it was a large single engine plane that was flying over head. We watched as the plane circled over head and made a be line to the highway running beside the local Wal-Mart to make a perfect emergency landing on US-23 about about 12:30PM. This guy landed on one side of the 4 lane road with out hitting any cars or trees and got it stopped about 100 feet from the next stop light!

As a trained 1st responder i made a quick U turn, burnt off about a thousand miles worth of rubber and was one of the very first on scene. I expected to see a nightmare and wanted to be there ASAP but God was looking over Wise VA today and the plane as well as the 2 guys inside did not have a scratch on them. He was not sure what happened to the plane but he was only about 2 air miles from the airport when he starting losing power so he put it down at the safest place he could find. Had he tried to make it to the airport, the surrounding area is very crowed and it could have been horrible if he crashed before he could get there.

Breaking news and you heard it first here. This is Carolina Thunder reporting for the Truckers Trucking Forum and that's the way it is.

Great job there SCOOP!:biggrin_25525: Good pilot too. Always FLY the PLANE no matter what is going badly. You can land any plane of any size dead stick if you keep your cool and a proper location is around. Good to have concerned trained people like you around too in case things should not have gone so well.

Ain't that near Big Stone Gap? If so, that is some pretty mountainous country. I see why it had no choice but the highway.

He can taxi back to the airport. :)

A few years ago, my wife was driving on I-15 north of San Diego in her convertible Camaro. A plane (Cessna) drifted quietly over her head (engine was shut down) as he was attempting to land in her northbound lane.
She started swerving right to left and created a traffic block, allowing the plane to land safely.
CHP and local media credited her with '...saving many potential lives..." with her quick thinking and action.
To this day she reminds me that she was so startled she forgot what she was doing, drove all over the road and was suddenly trying to regain control of her car after swerving all over!
