I am still employed but am planning on entering the truck driving fray within a year or so. I should mention I am 59 and will probably be offered early retirement before I am 62.
My plan is to get my CDL ahead of time, while I am still employed.
I went to a job fair and mentioned to a recruiter from Central Refrigerated that I was planning on going to a community college to get my CDL training.
The recruiter told me that I would be wasting my time doing that because I would still need to go thru the Central Refrigerated driving school.
Given the multiple threads on this site recommending the community college route to a CDL, is Central Refrigerated alone in discounting other driving schools in favor to their own??
Central Refrigerated - Is going to driving school waste of time?

Central just does this to make money. They are on of the few company's I know of that will not hire out of other schools. I believe they will probably change this policy before long, or they will not be able to get enough drivers.
You should wait on getting the license though. Most company's that hire from schools want the school experience to be within 6 months of the drivers hire date. Or they will ask you to take a refresher.semiret Thanks this. -
But if you think about it. It really is to your advantage to use a company to receieve your CDL. I mean they are willing to train you and if you have the drive and motivation to give it your all it could be worth your while to do it.

Well if you go to school you arent bound to a company for a certain amount of time and there are some companies out there that will take you out of school like werner. Not sure on central, but I have worked for werner and I got paid good and I was treated well till i made the mistake of making a uturn. My bro just went solo with central and as of right now he enjoys em. He got a pretty decent 09 volvo for his first truck which beat my 06 classic with werner lol. But its your choice, as long as you get in about a year or 2 you should have no problem going to a good company like Shaffer or Crete.
