I brought a load back from Washington to Chicago last year on a step deck. They were shrink wrapped on pallets and they rode with no problems. They want them to be tarped but, be able to have air so they dont get too hot. I just used two steel tarps and folded the flaps up so I had the top and about 2-3 feet covered down from the top, no real problem. The load I hauled was supposed to be 45,000 (900bags at 50#) I later found out each bag contains AT LEAST 50 #'s and 16 pallets at 50#'s add another 800 pounds, so that might be something to watch for.

I hauled them once. Big pain. Had to tarp and fold the sides up to let them continue to dry. (If they have too much moisture content the consignee may reject the load.) If you run into some rain you'll have to stop and drop the sides of the tarp down, to keep them from getting wet.

Make sure you put a 4x4 under the front of the front pallet and one under the back of the back pallet. This will keep the ends tipped toward the middle. Onions can pay very good but you need to load as many bags as possible. Also NEVER let them get the slightest bit wet or you will have just bought a load of onions. Keep your tarps open at the ends unless it rains.

Monitor the loading process. Make sure the pallets (product) are leaning inward. If one pallet is leaning outward, you'll have a problem for sure. A lot of the time, you load in the field and they just want to get you out of there as quickly as possible.
