1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

I failed to keep my heart rate low enough at Roehl's PWS and now I am back to square one:

    I need a job!

While I have no OTR experience, that's what I want to do, so I'd find spending some time with a mentor very useful. I learn very fast. That is my primary job skill.

I've had my CDL since '07 and the only incident I've had in twelve years was in my personal vehicle ("paced" at 70 in a 55). I am hard-working, dedicated, intelligent, creative, and simply want to earn enough scratch that my wife can go back to school and not back to work. As I do not have a piece of paper that says I can do what I can do (a degree), the only options left me to earn a real income are trucking (and I have a Class A) and joining a union (and I don't have the connections for that). I enjoy driving, so that makes the choice even easier.

I am in a bit of a unique position. I got into driving almost by accident. I got on with my former company as a one day laborer helping relocate goods to a new site across town. They apparently liked the way I worked, because I was with the company just over six years. In that time I worked in the warehouse and the office, usually on the same day. When we needed a new backup driver, I learned how to drive.

I did not attend driving school. I learned from an old school driver who told me every time he saw me reach for the clutch he'd punch me in the leg.

Since that time, the Champaign location closed its doors but retained its customer base. I've been running a local dedicated short haul taking empties down to southern Illinois and bringing the loaded trailers back for delivery the next day. I've done the local delivery route when the other driver has been on vacation, or out sick. I spent a week at the East St. Louis location while they had a driver out on vacation.

I need to bring home a good paycheck every week. Ideally, I need to be able to bring my truck home. I need good benefits because I'm a family man. I need a company that will treat me well and get me home when I need to be (weddings, funerals, etc.). In return I will be loyal, flexible and dedicated.

I'd like to start work (or orientation) on or before Monday, September 6th, if at all possible. I don't want to sound desperate, but I am. :biggrin_2559:

Are you being sarcastic? Text makes it hard to tell.

Am I asking for a lot? I don't know, honestly. Scheduling some home time for events I should be able to plan for months in advance doesn't seem, to me, to be a big deal. I live in a tiny town about forty miles from anything resembling a city (Champaign-Urbana), so keeping the truck at my house while I'm at home seems like a good deal, especially since I have a place I can even keep a trailer, quite literally right around the corner from my house. Because I've never really been in the trucking industry, I'm full of known unknowns and unknown unknowns.

What is standard? How much is too much?

So do you live in Champaign or atleast near it? I could ask my boss and see what he has to say. We drive here in Champaign. But my place;s insurance don't do no OTR experience hires. He may know someone to hook you up tho. If you want some verifiable OTR experience. Look in the county newspapers like Edgar and Douglas county for some farmers around here. They are no BS good guys to work for. I warn ya, they are cheap tho. Most just want hard worker, don't care about experience. And your lunches are usually free. Sorry my father already has my replacement. :(

Howdy neighbor. Your first name wouldn't happen to be Matt would it?

Ok, now I'm really thinking I know you.

MrHales keep us posted on your progress. Let us know as well if the job you "now have" is with a legit company. It's always good to know someone finds a decent job. It's also good to know if they're not so legit. Good luck to you.

Name of the company is Marvin Keller. They seem very legit. Got my interview with the owner who had a definite opinion of the "factory" state of larger carriers if that says anything towards his integrity. My opinion is, of course, skewed since I tend to develop immediate, deep affection for people who hire me. :-D

At any rate, I applied to this company a few years back when I was sort of between gigs. I had a transportation issue though, and it didn't work out (no car = no job = no car). The gentleman I spoke to at the time said I should come back if my situation ever changed... so I did. :)

It actually seems a lot like the last company I worked for, in a good way. Everyone I've met seems very friendly and the fact that they are willing to take a gamble on me gives me warm feelings.
