Can dispatch force you to recap?

I've only been driving for 4 months and just last week learned about some things (trainer only taught me to get the load and get it there, basically).

I always thot my dispatcher set my PTA for after delivering but learned on Friday that I was supposed to do that. I also thot I did that after delivering but learned last night that I was supposed to do it after I picked up my load and figured out what time I would deliver because the load planners had already decided what load to send me before I delivered the current load.

Amyway...after delivering yesterday afternoon, not getting an empty, I looked at my hours and saw that I had 5 hours left on my 70. So I set my PTA out in order to get a restart. My dispatcher called me and said that I should have set my PTA for midnight and just do a recap since I would pick up 4 hours (had a bad day a week ago). Most of my time is spent driving because I go off-duty as much as possible just to save my 70.

you need to keep track of your hours so that you KNOW what you can and can't do. If you had set your time for midnight then you woulda had 9 hours to run on...it's a cat and mouse game but it is up to YOU to know how to log and calculate your hours etc....it's a bit frustrating at first but you'll get the hang of it.

They can't really force you to do anything, but keeping them informed helps them keep you loaded with freight you can deliver. At least that's how it's supposed to work.

Yes, a company can require you to do the recap as part of company policy.

There is no law that requires you to complete the recap.

You are still supposed to know exactly what your hours are.

You should keep up on how many hours you can run. You don't always have to do a 34 hour reset. Back before the DOT changed the hours of service that is how we ran. You picked up so many hours at midnight and that's what you worked the next day.

Thank you. I'm learning so many things just by talking to other drivers.

You seem to have a very good set of planners and dispatcher.
Most I have dealt with will give you loads you cannot do in your hours, and it is your job to realize that and tell them you cannot do the load in the time given.
The fact that you made it for a few months without going over your 70 by accident shows they are really paying attention to your hours, and taking that into account in their planning.
If you had a poor week the week before your dispatcher told you the best way to work your hours.
If you are getting back hours at a steady rate each day, a restart may not be such a good idea. I tend to like them when I run really hard and I am out of hours for 24 hours plus. That way I can take the 34, and run more miles than is legally possible in a normal 70 hour week.

I'm headed for home this weekend some time (it will probably be Monday tho) and when I come back out I'm going to try really hard to set my PTA right and work the recap hours. I'm usually only out for 2 weeks so sitting for 34 hurts me financially.

I went over my 14 last night by 2 hours because the receiver kept me 5 hours. Had to drive 6 miles to a small truck stop. One thing I learned last night is that the DOT will give you 10 miles to get somewhere when you are out of hours.

My PTA was set for 8:30 this morning...got up at 6:30 and found a pre-plan for a load that picks up 25 miles away at 2:00 this afternoon. Then I have a 550 mile trip to deliver tomorrow between 10 and noon.

if you can run enough to need a restart by the 7th day, you shouldn't be hurt by it. I kind of like having the break between weeks to keep from getting burnt out.
