So have lots of other people...but not all of them were as fortunate as you.
I bet the ones that did have trouble also thought "It won't happen to me"....
I've been in the worst parts of every major city in the US at one time or another too...and you wanna know where I finally ran into trouble?
In a TA truckstop in GA...and again at a Flyin J in SC.
I'm just lucky that way I guess...I have not told these stories on here (except to a friend in a PM)...until now.
The first one...
I pulled into a TA truckstop to get fuel and food at about 10:30 am. after fueling I went inside to Burger King and got a meal to go, then went back to the truck to eat. I was sitting in the sleeper...about 3 bites into my Whopper when my truck door came open and a guy climbed in and sat down for about 1 second, then turned toward the sleeper...it was about this time that he decided he had gotten in the wrong truck
. What he saw was me chewing up a bite of Whopper with a 45 pointed at his head...about 2 feet away.
He quickly said he had accidently gotten in the wrong truck...I replied "You're #### right you did"...then he carefully backed out of my truck and left.
Maybe he was telling the truth...after all, I have stuck my key in the wrong truck door...a couple of times.
Maybe he just didnt expect the 45...I'll never know.
I ALWAYS lock my doors when I'm in the truck...why I didnt that time is beyond me.
The other one...
I was walking into the truckstop and a guy came up to me trying to say he knew me from the Navy (I was never in the Navy), I didn't know him...and while I suck at remembering names, I NEVER forget a face.
I told him "No...I don't know you" and kept walking (I'm not a very friendly person unless there is a reason behind it, and he should have taken the hint)...as I walked out past a truck another guy grabbed me by my left arm and jerked me back and around...I never saw his face, and honestly didn't care if he was my best friend...I drew the pistol as I came around (an all steel 1911...makes a good club too), and whacked him right up side the head with it, HARD. He went out like a light, with a pretty good gash across his temple and fore head.
His buddy was still standing there a few feet away...I calmly asked him if he wanted to continue this...he took off in a hurry without even saying goodbye.
Myself...I would have left that other guy laying there and not gave him another thought (dead, alive...I don't care)...but there were several witnesses to this, and they called the police before it was even over (and it didn't last long)...cops showed up, I explained what happened, they told me they had been looking for that guy that was knocked out...he was wanted for failure to appear in court, and he had priors (aggravated assault, burglary, etc...I forget what else, this has been a while back)
In the end...it worked out good, I didn't even have to press any charges...he was going to jail anyway, and that was good enough for me.
The cops told me "Good job, drive safe"...and that was it.
And in case anybody is wondering why I didn't shoot the MF'er...I never saw a weapon on either of them, thats why. The cops did find a 9mm (Jennings
) on the guy that was knocked out....but it never made it out of the pocket of those baggy #$$ jeans. Could I have handled him without my pistol? The way it happened...yes, probably. But if it had happened differently, as in he had drawn his pistol??? I'm lean, mean, and onery as they come...but I'm no match for a bullet. There's only one way to win a gunfight...and its hard to do without a gun.

outerspacehillbilly and silverram323 Thank this. -
Both of these are from carlessness. You should have locked the door, even though with the trucks, some are keyed the same.
As far as on the parking lot, awareness is the key. I have encountered some winners there as well.
As far as size, hardly anything to stop someone. -
Agreed 100%...I was careless but it was because I was dog tired, hungry, dirty, and distracted (both times).
Awareness is a key factor...but even it WILL NOT save you every time.
Those guys in the parking lot were bold, determined, and experienced...they did all this even with witnesses present (and that is what I did not expect)...they were gonna get somebody, and most people would have had a really bad day right then and there...
Yes...I learned from it.
The "Dodge City...shootouts in the streets" remarks...the libs have been throwing that tired old excuse around since "shall issue" CCW went into effect...it has been proven wrong many times over.
In all areas that have adopted shall issue CCW (which is nearly everywhere)...crime has went down.
In Chicago...it has been steady with no change, because they will not allow CCW in IL. And that too will change in the near future...like it or not, we are winning the battle for shall issue CCW. California is proof of that...IL is next on the list. -
my brother in law use to be a state inspector for the state of KY. He carried a mini-glock as part of the job. (dunno why, or if 'state inspector' was his official title) but he said the state of KY has a few states they accept a CCW license for. not not many...i'd say no more than 5 or so.
What you do, figure out what state has CCW licenses and which one recognizes the most out of state CCWs, then you go to the ones it dont, and get one of your own there. Granted you might end up paying $100 a pop...but you'd be covered. -
This is a really bad suggestion, your going to start a fire, your probably in the sleeper, the fire is now between you and the outside world, This is working out very well and before its over being killed by a mugger would see, like a good idea.
Before you decide to do this take a trip to the local burn center, Probably change your mind. I don't care about the person breaking into your truck, this flare idea is going to burn you even if you hit them, and because it generates its own o2 a extinguisher will not out it out. Bad idea. -
+1
Magnesium flares are self oxidisng, they are very dangerous. There have been several instances on aircraft carriers where a flare from a jet has gone off on deck, and has burned through several armor plated decks down through several compartments and the only way for it to stop is to let it burn its self out.
This is also why Titanium is dangerous, Titanium is a flamable metal as well. It takes one heck of a lot of heat to get it going, but once you do, boy howdy. -
forgive me if this has been asked because im sure it has...im clear on CARRYING being a bad idea when your in foreign states, thats just commom sense. but what about having a gun in the truck kept in a case except when your parked and sleeping or something?
i havnt ever bothered to get a cc, because my need to physically carry a gun is minimal, but i do keep one ready to rock at home at all times. and here it is fine to have a gun in your car or whatever assuming its safely put away and not loaded, while your driving around or whatever.
i know cali still would be a problem, but lets keep the discussion to the 49 non douchey states for now. -

I don't think a tire iron will win in a gub battle....kinda like bringing a knofe to a gun fight. I carried a .25 cal. on my ankle when working on the meat wagon in ATL. Been shot at more than once while in downtown in gang land. I wont take any chances when it comes to MY safety.
MOST places will allow leniancy if you tell them up front that you have a weapon in your car ( I guess it would be the same for a rig) and you have a permit to carry.HFC Thanks this.
