Assuming I get hired and will be driving OTR for at least a couple years, I am thinking of canceling my $800yr car insurance. I plan to sell my car and when home on weekends will drive relatives car, or use rental car.

My question is if I go ahead and lease a truck, will my cancelling the car insurance have an impact on the premium I will pay for the truck.

My oher question is should I have an accident while driving a truck, and for whatever reason unable to drive a ruck again, how much of an impact would this have on getting car insurance again.:biggrin_25524:

No, as an O/O your truck insurance is under a commercial policy. However some companies give multipolicy discounts. But this depends on the carrier.

    BluesTech Thanks this.

Most insurance companies will charge you a surcharge if you haven't had auto insurance for any period of time... they consider you a risk.

Don't complain to me about it... I'm just the messenger.

    BluesTech Thanks this.

The only accident you are guaranteed to have is if you lease a truck! I wouldn't worry about that for at least a couple of years. You have a long road of learning ahead of you. If you were going to get your pilots license right now would you be leasing a jet?

This is true but he plans on selling the car he has and with still carry insurance on the lease. There for it should not be considered a gap in coverage.

He lives in Michigan, so it is no fault insurance. If you keep the car put state minimum (only time I would recommend this coverage) on it or atleast storage insurance and if you do don't let anyone drive it.

When I am OTR dirving I am cutting back my truck insurance from personal to recreational. I will still keep my higher limits. But it makes the insurance cheaper do to lack of use.

Sorry forgot to hit this topic. If any insurance claim is made due to an accident it will affect your insurance. I'm not sure in Michigan, but in Ohio if lets say I get hit twice in a two year period and I am not at fault, this will increase my insurance with some carriers. Same thing goes if you get a speeding ticket in a big truck it will affect your insurance rating.

Yes, I am a licensed insurance agent in Ohio. The information I am giving should be checked with you insurance agent, due to different policies of carriers.
