I just bought a few garbage trucks for the drivetrains, Cat's with 3500 series Allison Automatic transmissions. I want to use the engine and transmission setup in a different vehicle.....well much to my dismay the transmission only shifted up to 5th...6th is blocked out electronically...I called my local Covington/Allison dealer and they say they will not unlock it as truck was not designed for the double overdrive...tried to explain that I'm not even using it in the garbage truck that its going into another truck.....they will not even talk to me any more say they have to get an engineer involved.
Can any one guide me through the process to unblock the 6th gear...I'd like to get it functional and at least test drive it in the garbage truck to verify proper operation before I undergo this drivetrain transplant.
If it is something that I, as an end user, cannot do please direct me to someone that can...the only electric tools I have here is Cat ET.
Thanks Rob

You need allison doc with reprograming level. They should be able to turn that option on?
-
Do you have that ability Mr. Davenport?
-
I may be able to get it, Will have to make some calls to see if that option is possible in the file. Can you get the numbers off the allison module?

Uhh why haven't you called Allison asking them why you can't get Covington to turn on 6th gear? My point is when did Covington become an engineer?
And on a deal like this don't call walk in the door and talk to the service manager and explain that you want to KNOW if that trans is any good before the transplant. You want the service manager not the service writer. BTW they can dyno that trans out of the truck or they should be able to dyno it. -
Allison is very specific about approval of every application for their transmissions, before and after the first truck they go into. They will not unlock 6th gear without the approval from HQ of the application. They will also charge a decent price for it too.
