How do truckers call other truckers?

Hey everyone. Question from a four wheeler- what's the best way to get a trucker's attention? How do you identify one another on the road? I've been trying to listen for some clues on this but haven't really figured it out... is it by what's being hauled? Can you call someone out as SWIFT or Wal-Mart or Sunoco tanker?

Also, as a trucker, do you take offense when a four-wheeler asks you to get out of the way? Living in the Northeast you've got a LOT of exits on every highway, and I feel a lot of truckers will sit in the middle or left lane just so they don't have to deal with constantly merging traffic. I'm hesitant to blow by 'em on the left, but also hesitant to call someone out when they've got 20 tons on me....

Are you talking about calling them on the CB? Just call out the company name. If they have their CB on they might answer or they might not.

Keep in mind, trucks KNOW they are in your way. Your state (and many others) have chosen to restrict their speed to 55 or worse. My truck will run 100mph all day long, its moving slow because your state makes it do so, no other reason. All your gonna do is piss off a trucker if you start jabbering at them to get out of your way lol. They knew you were there even before you got in that lane. Also, you don't want trucks in the right lane. Nobody can merge! They belong in the middle lane to keep traffic flowing.

Speaking for myself, and nobody else. I run the left lane only when I can safely pass in a quick moment or two. Otherwise I will stick to the middle lane, even if it means getting screwed at 45mph for hours on end. Probably more than you I HATE it when governed trucks running at 1mph difference want to play the passing game. I watch this stupid game played day in day out, and would love to throttle the guy doing the passing in his slow ### truck.

Yeah, I'm not terribly impatient or anything, and I know they know I'm there, but sometimes you get these guys sitting left with a long line of people behind 'em, and clear space to the right (I have no doubt that 99% percent of truckers are better and more aware drivers than their counterparts in cars, but there are some times when I can't figure out what they're thinking, if at all). What inevitably happens is that people start to go around on the right and then the truck is kind of stuck on the left for awhile... bad situation.

But more to my question, say you're trying to get the attention of some all-white box truck with no lettering or whatever, or a tanker or something else where maybe the only lettering is on the side, or on the side of the tractor... how do go about addressing someone without sounding like an ###?

Truck is full of blind spots. I'm not changing lanes at the drop of a hat just because there are too many spots for a car to hide. Gets even worse when the cars are getting impatient, like the scenario you described, because it's way too common for them to try and fly around you while you are changing lanes. I'll let a car pass me, because they can do it easier and safer than I can. I won't hang out there if I can see that I'm screwing up a lot of traffic, but a few cars passing me doesn't bother me.

However, one of the big reasons that I tend to stick in a lane is because I know what trouble it will be to get back in that lane later on. Take note of just how long a truck is and add some more room for a safety margin, and you'll realize just how big of a space we need. That gets even more complicated when cars tend to hang out right next to the truck, then ignore our turn signal, making a safe lane change impossible. Don't want to be involved with merging traffic in the right lane, and I prefer a middle lane where I could possibly have the two lanes to each side of me as exits in an emergency situation.

I remember a place on an old local route I used to run where I would have to make a left turn, so I would get into the left lane several miles before my turn. My truck was governed slower than the traffic and I often got caught at the red light, with the resulting very slow accelerating up to speed, so I always had pissed off traffic behind me, proved by the number of one finger salutes I would get. I tried several times to wait until I was closer to my turn to get into the left lane, and every single time I missed my turn (which then put me into an area unsafe for trucks) because I couldn't get over. Had the four wheelers been a little nicer to me and let me change lanes, I would have been able to be much nicer and not held up traffic.

Anytime I've ever been anywhere near NYC, my CB is off.

However if you're on the LI Expwy and trying to raise a tanker that's headed east, simply key up and say "Eastbound tanker, you got it on?"

If it's an unmarked trailer, you can either call 'em by their brand of tractor (ie, eastbound Pete, KW, Volvo, Freightshaker). You could also just say eastbound big truck, but that might bring on a come back of, "Which eastbound big truck you trying for, driver?"

As already stated, trying to tell any big truck driver how to drive (regardless of how little sense their maneuvers, lane position, etc makes to you) will bring about quite a bit of attitude and rightfully so IMO. The average 4-wheeler drives 10,000-15,000 miles per year whereas the average over the road big truck driver will easily do upwards of 10 times that many miles in a year and many have driven millions of miles without an accident or moving violation. Who do you think has a better idea what's going on out there???

what ya do 4 wheeler is if you have a cb call out to the whatever ( n,s,e,w) bound truck like this....." hey north bound tanker ya got your ears on" if they dont reply put a mile marker they just passed. if you still get no reply one of several reasons would be ....no radio, radio not on, your radio is getting stepped on by bigger radios.
But I will warn ya ...if you're just wanting to call out to them to tell them to move over you are probably NOT gonna like what you hear back. Just saying man

Possibly using the location i.e; mile marker, recent exit number, directional reference.

Please provide an audio recording of this encounter.
