    Hi, everyone. I'm not quite sure what you'd call me...I drove a flatbed doing pick-ups and deliveries for the same company for 21 years and then one morning when I went into the office to get my first run for the day, I was told that they had decided to do away with my job. My immediate supervisor had never had a complaint about me and had told me he was happy with my performance not too long before this. To say the least, I was shocked. Well, you should always have a backup plan, and mine was to go to one of the hotshot companies and continue doing what I've been doing for years. I had another suprise coming. Everyone I contacted wanted me to have a CDL. No problem, I'll just go out and get one. Did I mention that I'm diabetic? Taking my insulin is an automatic disqualification on a DOT physical. So now I'm aware that a CDL is not an option for me. I tried to find another job, but nobody seems to want to hire a 55 year old. So now my plan is to get a vehicle( not sure if it will be a truck or van), and start running either hotshots or expedited. I'm sorry that this is such a long post, but I figured that the background would stop a lot of the "just get the CDL" type of post. It isn't an option for me. Starting from that point, I'd appreciate any advice that you all can give. Thanks.

    p0p89,
    I am sorry that you have the kind of luck i seem to have. I have an idea, maybe more, of employment for you. You might want to look into being an escort driver for big trucks. Call some escort companies up and get information as to qualifications and equipement needed. Some of those companies will also help you get started by having classes to teach you the ins and outs of the buisness.
    Another idea is to never quit looking in the classified adds for employment. There is often jobs that actually lead to better jobs later, or even pay better as is. Many jobs you may work from home and on your own time with a computer without being a Geek or a Wizard with the modern electronic era. Good luck in your search, and i hope you sucess in life.

    I don't want to burst your bubble as far as Hotshot or Expidite work but you will most likely need a medical card for that too.

    Don't have the reg handy but you need a medical for any CMV with a GVWR over 10,000# or any weight with Hazmat, in any quanity in interstate commerce. Doesn't matter if the vehicle requires a CDL or not.

    From the FAQ page on the FMCSA website;
    8.
    Are CMV drivers who operate in interstate commerce required to have a medical certificate?
    Drivers are required to have a DOT Medical Certificate:
    If they operate a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), gross combination weight rating (GCWR), gross vehicle weight (GCW), or gross combination weight (GCW) of 4,536 kilograms or more in interstate commerce.
    If they operate a motor vehicle designed or used to transport more than 15 passengers (including the driver) in interstate commerce.
    If they operate a motor vehicle designed or used to transport between 9 and 15 passengers, for direct compensation, beyond 75 air miles from the driver's normal work-reporting location, in interstate commerce
    If they transport hazardous materials, in a quantity requiring placards, in interstate commerce.

    hi and welcome to the forum.

    I'm sorry for your troubles and hope that you'll find some great advice and ideas here.

    I suggest you look about the forum and then post your question in some of the specific forums. Maybe questions for experienced drivers.
